Trying to clean up my mess of cabling finally.  Attempting to go for the "wireless" look that a lot of those "show off your desk setup" videos on YouTube have.  Slightly challenging since I have a ton of flightsim peripherals that get swapped around and using a mix of different USB ends.  Anyway, this question is more about routing my power.  I'm debating whether to spend the 40-50 for a basic "PDU" for my UPS unit (basically a power strip without surge protection intended to be used with UPS units, anything else will void the warranty) or to completely re-arrange my power setup.  The only thing that really "needs" to be on it is the computer and one monitor.  Problem is, as you see now in the pic below (not normally that messy, I undid all my zip ties in prep for the project) the UPS sits on the left side of the desk, the computer on the right, and the closest outlet is the one nearly in the middle of the desk just to the left of the window.

My options if I don't do the PDU are basically put the UPS behind the computer on the right side of the desk, but it only has a 6 foot power cord so my only option to run it is along the desk on the back side then straight down to the socket.  That maybe gives me about 10" of slack or less so I can't even run it straight down to the baseboard on the right side and then back up.  I can't put the UPS on the left side either because if you see that thick cable running diagonally from the UPS unit to the desk, that's the power cable for the computer.  It won't reach to the edge of the desk.  Just wondering what you guys would do?  The option of moving the UPS to the right side and running the power along the desk and then down, or spend the money for the PDU strip and just have one cable coming down a desk leg to the UPS?

Thanks, yeah I looked at those at one point, though I ended up buying zip tie anchors etc instead.  My current problem is that power cable from the PC is at a direct angle right now to the UPS with no slack.  so I have to move the UPS somewhere, or get an approved type of power strip for it to mount under the desk so I can get the PC power cable cleaned up.

Sometimes you can find those under desk mount trays that might be big enough to fit the UPS. Then if you buy that IKEA mount you can place the extension cord strip on top of that.

Yeah unfortunately doesn't help the current primary issue messing up the whole plan.  That stretched PSU cable from the PC at the top right to the UPS at the bottom left.  I think I'm just going to take everything apart this weekend and lay it out again and see if I can move the UPS to a better spot.

Buy yourself an power strip and some velcro tape.
Velcro the power strip to the bottom/back of the desk/table.
Or, if you don't mind it being semi-permanent, 3M Double Sided Tape.

    Another option are under-mount trays.
    https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01BVYW7UY

They also make wire frame trays:
    https://www.amazon.com/Cable-Tray-v-1-White-18/dp/B07F9ZQMVR

And I recommend velcro ties, rather than zip ties.  Less chance of accidental cuts.

And if you're trying to sleeve a bunch of wires together, velcro tie the cables together first, THEN wrap the sleeving, THEN velcro tie the sleeving at the ends on both sides of the original ties on the cables.
    https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07FW3GTXB

Keeps everything neat, no sliding and totally reusable if you need to revise.

Thanks, yeah I do plan to use the double sided tape.  This is the PDU unit I've been thinking about getting, much cheaper than APC's stuff, but they said it could be any https://www.amazon.com/dp/B076TKFHB1 they just don't recommend a standard power strip to be connected and surge protectors are really bad due to the sine wave emulation the UPS does.

Will do.  Some of my flight controller cables might just be "contained chaos" and held somewhere neat so they can be used when needed.

Well, after a couple months of watching various videos and collecting ideas, version 1 of cable management is done.  Main thing I'm not too happy about is I did the "punch a hole under the mouse mat" thing but where the cables go under makes it pop up more than expected.  Maybe since it's a lighted mat and the light piece isn't as flexible.  Overall though I think it looks 100% better than my OP.  Still figuring out what to do with the headset as well.  I have a hook and can put it on the left side of me and feed the cable from the GameDAC unit that's behind the keyboard out that mousemat hole, but for now I fed it under the edge of the mat and put the headphone stand with it behind the monitor on the right side for when not in use.

In the 3rd pic you can see my solution for handling the USB cables for the various sim peripherals I use (3xUSB-C and 2xUSB-B plus the rudder pedals).  The ends that need to be pulled out for use are on clips and just unwind when needed.  I also just left the power brick on the far right on the floor for my work issued laptop.  I wasn't sure if they'd be ok with me sticky foam taping it up.  It's hopefully going to move to its own desk on the opposite side of this one anyway so it's theoretically temporary.  The cable coil on top of the tower is a 3rd party fiber optic USB-C "Link" cable for a Quest 2.  I'm still debating what to do with that as well since I might just go to Virtual Desktop for it.

It's not 100% a "wireless" look, but it's wayyyyyyyyyyyyy better than any desk cable management I've ever attempted before.

    Looking Gr8 !! Nice improvement.
I have a corsair mouse mat  that did not want to lay flat. I ended up stretching it out on the corners and tagging it down with alien tape. Also found out (quite by accident) that wires hold firmly to it as well and can be pulled away with no mess in the future.

Yeah there’s like 5 USB cables for sim peripherals alone in that middle section and I was trying to figure a way to coil excess and also have a coil of the length needed to use the peripheral without getting tangled with the others. Took me like 2.5 hours to do it planning as I went just for that section. I set each peripheral up so I could use it to get the exact length I needed (with buffer of course).

Great job. I wish i could have read this sooner.
My personal tip: use the edge of the desk including legs and frames of the furniture you are using to hide the cables
That's how i did mine. I use the frames of my obuto cockpit to hide the cables with velcro.

Those who abuse power, are nothing but scumbags! The challenge of power is how to use it and not abuse it. The abuse of power that seems to create the most unhappiness is when a person uses personal power to get ahead without regards to the welfare of others, people are obsessed with it. You can take a nice person and turn them into a slob, into an insane being, craving power, destroying anything that stands in their way.

No worries, I actually did that a lot.  The power cables that had to come down to the floor are hidden behind the legs and attached with zip ties to zip tie anchors that are stuck on the legs.  Since they're kind of an 8 sided leg they have flat spots for the anchors to attach to easily.  I do have to move my mouse dongle a bit and re-run its cable though so I can pull the cable out to charge my mouse.  The USB-C for my xbox controller was what I had intended to use to keep my Steelseries Prime mouse charged and I swore I'd used that cable on it before on the desk, but apparently not because I went to charge the mouse and the connector is just a hair too wide to fully seat into the opening at the front of the mouse.  The one I had been actually using is now set up for the length needed for a peripheral for simming so it doesn't really work as well.

LOL so I found a flaw in my management and need to fix it.  That subwoofer, right above the right edge that power cabled with the slight loop in it (and the others) need to be secured with a wire tie anchor and be pushed up to be a bit tighter.  I have a habit of putting my feet up on the sub as a foot rest, and uh, well let's just say it didn't go so well tonight.  Apparently I caught it enough to pull it not out of the socket, but enough to disconnect it electrically.  Was panicking trying to figure out why my PC just instantly shut off and had zero power even though the two monitors plugged in to the same power strip were working fine.  I thought we had a power hit from the windy/rainy afternoon we were having, but that just contributed more to the confusion as that strip is connected to a UPS and the UPS was like "yeah everything's fine down here bro".

Effective desk cable management can make a huge difference to your workspace. It not only keeps your desk clean and tidy but also improves safety and productivity. Here are some tips to help you get started:
    1. Get the right cable organizers: Cable organizers are a must-have accessory to keep your desk free from clutter. Invest in different types of organizers such as cable covers, Cord Covers, and Wire Covers to get the job done.
    2. Label your cables: Label your cables with numbers or letters to easily identify which cable goes where. This will save you a lot of time and avoid the unnecessary hassle of untangling cables.
    3. Use zip ties: Zip ties are great for bundling cables together and keeping them organized. Simply use a zip tie to tie the cables into one bundle and then secure it with a clamp or cable tie mount.
    4. Avoid running cables under the desk: It is always best to avoid running cables under the desk as this will not only create a tripping hazard but will also make it difficult to access the lines when they need to be moved or changed.
    5. Get a cable holder: Consider investing in a cable holder so that the cables don't get tangled when they are not in use. This will also make it easier to access the cables when they are needed.
By following these tips, you should have a neat and organized desk in no time. Good luck and happy organizing!
