Just got the z690 and paired it with the 3090ti and a 1000 watt P6. Right of the bat I found that the EPS cables to the CPU (8 pin into the psu and 4+4 into the motherboard) are not keyed the same as the CPU power socket on the motherboard. Also if both the motherboard sockets and the CPU sockets on the PSU are the same and both are 8 pin, why not just make 2 8 pin to 8 pin keyed the same? Why the 4 +4 end? Its a pain to plug in and the clips do not line up with the retainer on the mobo socket to boot. Anyone else found their PSU cpu cables dont match the z690 socket? Is there another cable that needs to be bought?

Nope. Did not have that problem with the g3 power supply cables.

That's some weirdness there mate. EPS cables are universal. They're 4+4 because there are many boards that sport either single 4 pin EPS [not many nowadays], but more that sport 8 + 4.

Can You send photos of these faulty cables? Their board connectors?

You must be looking at it wrong somehow, never heard of that issue, as for your other question, some motherboards just use, 1-8 pin & 1-4-pin, at the CPU socket on the motherboard, why the split 4+4 pin. They use the 1, 8-pin + the 1-4 pin. Why I not buy a motherboard like that, they claim they can handle the i9-12900k, reviews on those motherboards say otherwise.

I just read that the one 4pin that has all rounded corners will plug into any socket IE with 2 square and 2 rounded. So use the one 4 pin that is correctly keyed to the motherboard, and plug the 4 rounded corner plug in beside it with the clip on the same side and you are fine. The 2 sockets on the motherboard that are rounded will orient the plug so you dont plug it in backwards...the other 2 rounded will simply plug into the square sockets on the mobo. Somehow I got it in my head that it should have been keyed the same on both sides but now that I think about it, I remember that that second half of a 4 pin could be plugged anywhere.....

yep -- i went through the exact same thing. with a Corsaire AX860 PSU when i first assembled my current build last February.

and i felt i needed an additional adapter or two just to be a perfectionist like i do when building a PC. this thread seems as good a place to note it:

CPU 8 Pin Power Extension Cable ATX CPU 8 Pin Female to 8(4+4) Pin Male EPS Extension Cable for Motherboard (Not PCI-e VGA) 12 Inches (2 Pack) TeamProfitcom

i believe the EVGA Phone Support confirmed all u have posted too on this thread. Plus pics on the ^^product link confirms it.

and i think i found a full explanation of all ^^ on web too, using keywords like "CPU 8 Pin Power Cable" and especially "Not PCI-e VGA".

Note: that in addition to the pics on the ^^product link, the reviews for it and questions for the product also helps to understand all questions in OP for anyone that reads this thread now or in the future.

the two CPU 8 Pin Power Extension Cables ^^ have worked flawlessly for going on seven months now. the quality look and feel is excellent.

    GL on ur build!

While the plugs are universal it’s always best to replace the cables any time you replace a PSU or contact the manufacturer to make use the cables are wired the same. People have fried computers thinking because the connectors on the ends fit into the PSU itself that the wired the same on the PSU end. The mother end should be universal though.

Sorry mate, was away for the weekend.

Well, I just meant to ask You, it's like that kids old toy, block to square opening, prism to triangle opening, ball to circle opening, etc.

So they fit and work correctly, right?

Someone was asking today about CPU 8 Pin Power connectors and i decided to point them to this thread and in addition add the Pic below. It's of a GIGABYTE Z690 AERO D, that i discovered today.  (MOBO with one 4-pin and one 8-pin EPS Connections on it).

Yep! Solid 8-Pin goes to the PSU and 4+4-Pin to the Motherboard.
