Hey guys,

Since winter and temperatures dropped i'm having a "cold boot" bug situation.

When i start my PC in the morning on the first boot my screen stays black, no uefi/bios screen displayed. Motherboard LED displays shows "3B" which translates to "Post-Memory South Bridge initialization is started" according to the MB manual and 2 red leds are lighted:

 - PCIe LED for PCI-E 2. According to MB manual: "The LED will remain on when this PCIe slot detects an initialization failure in PCI-E 2."
 - PCIe LED for PCI-E 4. According to MB manual: "The LED will remain on when this PCIe slot detects an initialization failure in PCI-E 4."

In my PCIE 2 port my graphic card is plugged, in the PCI-E 4 there is nothing.

BUT! If i just let the computer like this for like 1 min, turn it off then back again the PC boots normally. If i then turn the PC off or just reboot it, it works perfectly. It only has this problem after staying off for a long time when i go to sleep. Dunno if cold temperatures in the morning play a role in this or not, but it seems it started to do this since winter came and temperatures dropped.

I didn't change anything before this happend, my CPU is a 9900k which i have put back to stock settings in case o/c was the problem but it didn't solve the problem. Also MB is running the latest bios.

Any idea?

Thanks in advance for your help :)

Update from today: same problem but different POST codes. I had to restart 3 times to get the PC to boot. The motherboard would hang onto these codes:

     - 62 : Installation of the South Bridge Runtime Services
     - 79 : CSM initialization
     - 96 : PCI Bus Assign Resources

Looks kinda random. I've tried disabling fast boot yesterday in the bios but didn't change anything sadly.

Since no one is answering, and those peculiar malfunctions led me to ruminate a bit, I offer the following five
lunatic theories in descending order of madness :|

    1. Mooninites are reprogramming your CPU while you sleep .
    2. The cold, then hot is causing your MB to flex slightly, and has made one of your cards work loose in its slot .
    3. The cold computer, then warm air when you get up causes a little condensation on the circuit boards and pins .
Just enough to make tiny shorts, and unwanted grounds .  Once it dries out it's back to normal .
    4. You have a delaminating circuit board, or capacitor .  Once warm the delamination closes and it's back to normal .
If that's the case, then the component will continue to degrade, and ultimately fail :(
    5. You have a weak CMOS battery, and the cold stops it from working altogether, goofing up the BIOS .

    Dear Mr. spider;
If you can reach your BIOS switch while the computer is running:
try the "hot flash method" https://www.evga.com/support/faq/FAQdetails.aspx?faqid=59733 to fix your BIOS 1 .
It worked for me, and I have the same board you do .

    To the Moon ..

Long update after: the problem was coming from my RAM. Strangely it worked without any problems for a long time using XMP until finally it didnt.

I removed XMP, setup the RAM manually and no more problems.

#edit: in fact it wasn't the ram xD look at my newer post below for the real solution :)

    Hey guys,

So i had the same problem happen to me again when i changed GPU earlier this week, and while my RAM was still manually setup. After a long and complicated troubleshooting i finally managed to find out the real root of the problem: an incorrect fixation of my nvme ssd. Cold boot was linked to the fact that when cold the connection between the ssd and its slot was improper, but after a few seconds the ssd had enough time to warm up, which would make it expand a tiny bit, and it would be enough for the connection to be proper again.

So after i removed the SSD and put it back again with special care, the problem went straight away. This is probably because the fixation system for the nvme ssd on the Z370 ftw is not very secure: there is no locking mechanism from the socket side of the nvme port, so when you try to install an nvme SSD in the motherboard in this slot when the motherboard is already seated in a vertical position in the computer case, gravity makes the SSD fall down a little from its socket even if it's fully inserted. So it's actually tricky to put it perfectly right and if you dont pay attention without knowing this detail it ends up falling down every time a tiny bit compared to a perfectly seated position.

When i put it back knowing this i actually had to do it almost literally 10 times before getting it perfectly right.

The Z370 ftw manual actually has at page 30 a special section talking about how to properly connect an nvme SSD, i suspect this might be linked to this problem. I have read this before but i didn't suspect it would be the root of the problem because my computer was working properly apart from this. Nothing indicated that the SSD had a problem in the normal operating of the computer. The only hint i got was one time when the PC had problem booting, i was able to go the bios and saw that the SSD was not detected, but that must have been a 1 time thing in perhaps 50 or more cold boots bugs before because usually the cold boot bug didn't allow me to see what was in the bios most of the time it happend.

Which means this problem all began when i first installed my new nvme ssd 2 years ago and i've been dragging it all along for all this time. It was very confusing than changing some unrelated parameters in the bios like the ram made sometimes a change, which made the troubleshooting even more complex. But i'm happy that everything is in order now.

I hope this can help some other people who might encounter similar problems in the future to not spend as much time as i have to fix this pain in the *** problem xD

Another update in case someone stumbles into this topic from a search engine: turns out it wasn't anything above, it is just room temperature.

When the winter comes and my room gets colder, this is what triggers the problem. I can replicate it pretty easily: when it's freezing outside, i just open my window, let ice cold air into my house for a few moments and my PC has a blue screen and can't start again with the same symptoms i described in my first post.

So i think there is a faulty component on my motherboard which stops working when temperature reaches below a certain point. But when it's above it works properly. Never seen this in all my IT years but there's a first for everything i guess :D

Since the motherboard is out of warranty i'll just keep it warm :D
