an x58 build to monitor and record a wired ip camera in my parrots nesting box.
i wanted a gpu to go with the blues and the gold ram, the intent is to have on of my 980tis installed and connected to a small monitor.
i put the matrix gtx580 in for now and it looks pretty good, but im thinking it would look better if i wrap the shroud in gold coloured foil.

asus p6x58d premium
x5690 xeon
adata xpg 1866 24gb (6 x 4)
asus matrix gtx580 platinum as a place holder, deciding on which 980ti to use.
seasonic 750w psu, coolermaster hyper212, silicon power 256gb ssd, pcie usb3 controller card
all jammed into the coolermaster q500l micro atx tower laying on its back like a pc should be.
last image is from the camera in night vision, the male above is feeding the female below.

you are right, they dont want something having such useful longevity, new sales every couple of years, not every ten.
and it has been fun tinkering with the voltages and things, ive overclocked it to 4.2 and had no issues.

and i forgot the all important boxes pics! i bought the mb box seperate for $25 and it came with all the proper accoutrements, unfortunately the cpu fan blocks the use of the little fan on the heatsink on top of the vrm.

i picked up this case for $5, no dents and had all the panels. im going to move the p6x58d/x5690 to this case to give the gpu some room. i put this system to see how this look. the psu is 1cm too long and blocks the top fan, ill have to use the shorter seasonic thats already with the system. more parts ordered!

a little dremeling, a little drilling, a little re-drilling and now there is lots of space and a nice cradle for a gpu.

Fantastic build.  Why do we keep going back to vintage? lol.  I just took apart my Z68 this year, and all I want to do is put it back together.  It wasn't too bad at almost 1440.
Can't wait to see how the case comes out!

i think i have all the parts i still need ordered, including a support request to noctua for a free cpu fan mounting clip set. i requested yesterday using their super easy web form, and they emailed me today that it is on the way. i didnt pay the fee for express service, since the last time i did a request i had the free mounting kit i required in 8 days via dhl.

and to celebrate a successful re-repair, in goes the 980ti. i put in the riser cable in so now i can leave the gpu installed while i wait for the parts.

i still have a couple minor things coming in the mail but the unsponsored noctua cooling solution is near completion. pretty much all the parts installed, just need to mount the ssd, a few more cable ties and buy some nail polish. i may exercise myself over to the dollar store this afternoon and check their selection.

a little change to the parts, switched to 3x8gb instead of 6x4gb ram and added the ram cooler, which i painted with what looked like a bronze colour nail polish, but since its dried looks sparkly rose (ill try to find a better colour). i did replace the psu fan grill and i spray primered the 3 sided cover. i also removed the led screen that was mounted in the middle of the chrome look front power switch assembly, i have an idea to put something there but will need to order some stuff.
my only real gripe is the front fan controller. when the knobs are at min power the lighting is blue, slightly increasing the power to all the way to max the lighting goes red, not terrible but not pretty.
i do have a mounting kit coming for the 92x14mm fan and some fan guards...

    6 x 80mm, 1 x 120mm and 1 x 40mm noctua 3-pin fans with 3 y-cables
    seasonic focus+ gold 750w psu
    silicon power 256gb ssd
five dollar case of unknown manufacture
lian li vented aluminum 5.25" drive bay covers
lian li aluminum 3.5" drive bay covers
4 channel fan controller of chinese manufacture
    modified thermaltake vertical gpu bracket
    8x80mm, 2x120mm, 4x40mm fan grills
galax gtx 980ti hall of fame

two front 80mm, front 120mm and top 80mm fans are intake. the two 80mm rear and the one 80mm side fans are exhaust.

I'm looking at this and I'm reminded of all the money I wasted in my teens and twenties. Should have purchased random lots of land.

Thanks for the flash backs, cool build.

I'm looking at this and I'm reminded of all the money I wasted in my teens and twenties. Should have purchased random lots of land.

Thanks for the flash backs, cool build.

Don't beat up yourself too much.  I could have purchased a home or condo in the late 90s, but I didn't figuring why even bother.  I could have purchased a condo for about $80k now worth close to $600k.

tru, instead of a condo you got gtx 285s in sli? seems like a better deal. and think of the capital gains tax money you saved but not buying the condo.

the knobs do look like they do something useful but it seems that even with all 7 fans on high, they are so quiet i can not hear them. but they do drop the temp of the cpu by about 6C when playing firestrike, gpu doesnt seem to be affected.
