EVGA GeForce RTX 2080 XC ULTRA GAMING - How many PCIE Lanes do I need? x8 or x16?

Finishing a build of a system with an EVGA GeForce RTX 2080 XC Ultra Gaming GPU, I'm limited by my Intel Core i7-8700K processor which only has 16 PCI Express 3.0 lanes.  The problem is, I would like to add 2 PCIE expansion cards as well (sound card and bluetooth card).  Adding these cards would lower the bandwidth of the PCIE 3.0 x16 slot my GPU is in to x8 from x16, I believe, at least if I use the second x16 slot.  If I use a different slot, I lose a SATA port, and I would like all of those avilable as well. 
 
I can sacrifice and do workarounds to give it x16, but I won't be happy about it. My question is, do I really need x16 to take full advantage of my GPU (for gaming), or is x8 sufficient?

    It would depend on the monitor you are using and the games you are running to be honest. For a lot of people it would be very little difference. At 4K it probably would matter more and at 1080p and 1440p it might matter but it's probably going to be on frames that the monitor wouldn't even display anyway or wouldn't effect the gameplay in any noticeable way.

    It would depend on the monitor you are using and the games you are running to be honest. For a lot of people it would be very little difference. At 4K it probably would matter more and at 1080p and 1440p it might matter but it's probably going to be on frames that the monitor wouldn't even display anyway or wouldn't effect the gameplay in any noticeable way.

    I'm not sure yet, I was going to start at 1080p and crank it up from there.  And I might get a new monitor soon.

    We are happy to report that the RTX 2080 Ti is finally able to overwhelm PCIe gen 3.0 x8, posting a small but tangible 2%–3% performance gain when going from gen 3.0 x8 to gen 3.0 x16, across resolutions. Granted, these are single-digit percentage differences, and you won't be able to notice them in regular gameplay, but graphics card makers expect you to pay like $100 premiums for factory overclocks that fetch essentially that much more performance out of the box. The performance difference isn't nothing, just like with those small out-of-the-box performance gains, but such small differences are impossible to notice in regular gameplay.

    Right but I don't have an RTX 2080 TI.  I'm honestly not sure how my card compares to one.  Looking at the specs, I think the xc ultra gaming has higher memory clocks but substantially fewer cuda cores.  So I'm honestly not sure how they stack against each other. 
     
    I'm still wondering if my card actually sees any difference at all between 8x and 16x.  If the TI is the first card to actually see any improvement with 8x, and my card is noticeably weaker than one, then there might be no difference between 8x and 16x.  If there is no difference for my card, I'll go with 8x.  If there's even a slight 1-3% difference, I may go with 16x.  Also, it may not be as simple as weaker and stronger, some specs on the TI are higher, some stats on the XC are higher, and I think it depends which specs use more pci bandwidth.

    The answer is not going to change. You will see a small percentage loss. Doubtful you'd see it express in anything but benchmarks.

    A very small, but detectable loss. If you're looking for an answer out to three decimal places, good luck.
