After messing around with my EVGA E762 which had problems I gave up on it and repurposed the build parts to a new rig. Going to do an ASUS Z8PE-D12X based build that will be using Dual X5690s and maximized memory at 96GB.

This is a used parts build mostly to have fun and make use of parts I have sitting around.

Case: Cooler Master HAF-X

Mobo: ASUS Z8PE-D12X

GPU: EVGA GTX980 Classified

RAM: G.Skill Ripjaws DDR3 96GB 8GBx12

CPU: Dual Intel Xeon X5690

PSU: EVGA 750GQ

Heatsink: Dual Cooler Master Hyper 212 BE

I've had the ATX version of that board running my file server for 10 years now, nice solid boards.

what killed the e762, the pcie speeds or clover or...? did you get clover to work?

The mobo and heatsinks came in today. I have 48GB of the ram, PSU, GPU, 1 of the CPUs and the case on hand from the old build. Still waiting for one of the CPUs, the PIKE card, the I/O shield and the other half of the ram to arrive. Guessing everything else will trickle in over the next week. PIKE card and i/o shield are both slow boating from China. The rest is from CONUS. I should be able get it running without the PIKE card and i/o shield though for initial boot testing though.

One issue I had a feeling I was going to have to deal with is the case mount standoffs for this form factor. Only 5 of the 9 standoffs can be used. I'm going to either have to glue or tap and die 3 more. 1 won't work no matter what I do because of the HAF-X has that area cut out for cable routing. 8 out of 9 standoffs should work fine though. This mobo is a snug fit for the HAF-X. Takes up all the way to the drive cages. Cable routing should be ok though as all the ports are positioned on the mobo oriented either on the top or bottom of the mobo.

The E762 isn't dead, it's just not working correctly with PCIe port speeds on 6 of the 7 ports. Only the first port will do PCIe 2.0 speeds, the rest are somehow stuck at PCIe 1.0 speeds no matter what I do. I have a feeling it is another symptom of what went wrong when 1 of the 2 NICs died from a power surge. Also CTRL-I won't put me into Intel RAID bios settings on boot when bios are set to RAID in the main bios. I used to be able to, but I think a few things are dead on the board despite it still "mostly" working. Enough oddities going on that I literally dumped a month into troubleshooting the E762 port issues with no positive outcome. I'm going to cut my losses on it and do this build with known working parts. Besides, this dual Xeon build sounds more fun to me. I would have done this as an EVGA SR-2 Classified build but the used SR-2 prices are insane when one is found.

Here is a photo of the first fit test with the HAF-X. Green dots indicate standoff locations that work with the case. Yellow dots indicate where I need to add standoffs. The red dot is a location the case won't allow a standoff because of case cable management cutout.

Other random things in the photo...yes the seller used taped cardboard to keep from socket pins being bent. I suppose it's better than nothing done. Initial inspection of socket pins show no issues. The first X5690 and 48GB of ram is installed. Waiting on the second X5690 and other 48GB of matched ram to arrive.

too bad for the 762, but you had fun and now you have dual xeon. that case looks so huge and its so tight inside. thanks for the pics!
and yes sr-2 prices are too much, i found one for a good deal but it was damaged in shipping so i had to return it. im now looking for a dual x99 i think for my next assembly, ive got some gpus that need homes and a dual x99 with twin 980ti folding rig would be nice.

I was actually surprised the motherboard fits in the HAF. I know it's a big case, but...  I would vote for tapping the standoff's, just to offer a solid mounting/connection point for the MB. That's a cool old school build, Brad. Not the same, but reminds me of the old BigAdv folding projects set-up, "back in the day". I used the AMD equivalent, on Linux. Had to have A LOT of help overclocking everything. You're making a lot of progress.

Tried to for awhile. SR-2 are insanity when it comes to street price. We're talking $550+ when they're found, slow-boated from China ebay. The Z8PE boards are however around $90-110 street price. It was a pragmatic decision not to break the bank of a decade old build. My particular Z8PE-D12X mobo was purchased for $104. What I'm losing out on is the overclocking aspect of the SR-2. If a unicorn SR-2 that doesn't rob the bank silently shows up in the future I'll probably swap for it though.

Second X5690 arrived today. Starting to configure for a test bench first power up in the next day or so.

It's alive on the test bench. Currently Windows 10 Pro installed. The test bench has allowed me to fine tune things a bit. It allowed me to figure out CPU cooler and fan orientation and that the Intel 5520 and Intel ICH10R chips on the mobo need active cooling on them. Probably pick up 1 or 2 60mm fans to put over them because the mobo would crash out after awhile if they weren't cooled. For now I have a single 80mm on them.

Not sure, thinking in rack cases the airflow is so much that it compensates. Out in the open outside of a case these chips are getting hot. I might pull the coolers off and reapply tim on them given how old the mobo is.

Small updates today. It's now stable and looks ready to be put into a case. USPS delivered the second 48GB of ram and it's installed and running at a full 96GB of ram now. Thinking on the motherboard standoffs for the case, there are nylon adhesive standoffs. Also looking for a few rubber standoff blocks to put in the gap areas to keep stress off the board. This board has large spans between the standoffs -- well, more than I'm used to. The rubber standoff blocks would address that and make sure there isn't any stress or sagging on the mobo. This seemed notable when I was seating the ram. I didn't want to push down too hard to flex the mobo. So far I've put it through the typical benchmarks and burn-in tests. It's stable and behaving. So far, so good. I think the weakness at this point is the HAF-X case. Pondering a new case maybe?

The system is finally fitted into the HAF-X. I stripped the case for cleaning so I need to get the fans and panels back on it. Good to see it alive in a case finally though.

Fans and panels are now back on. A few minor things like back card slot covers and one 3.5" drive rail needs to be added, but it's finished for the most part. A USB3 card, a NVME card adapter and the ASUS PIKE raid card are also added in. Looks like the budget 24 core / 96GB ram workstation is up and running good now.

A square of 3M industrial 2-sided tape at the fan hub and on the corners where there wouldn't be regular airflow through the fan. It's not going anywhere with that adhesive. That 80mm fan really needs to be a 60mm and 40mm to fit the heatsinks and not cover my spare SATA ports.

Pondering a SATA power cable extender to clean up the cabling to the USB3 card. Also a few zip ties wouldn't hurt to bundle the PSU cabling.

Using default clocks on everything. Main priority on the build so far is just making sure everything is rock solid. The 212s are working flawlessly. Good temps on them.

It'll be using it to run OBS for my Twitch streams and sometimes as a processing node for WebODM where it's more important to have that memory than how fast it processes the data. The 24 cores are handy, but the multi-core computational power doesn't scale close to modern CPUs. That 96GB of memory is super useful for large data sets though.

PCIe 1.0 is causing by NF200 chip.   E762 have two of them.
