So I thought about a satirical twist to "rate my build" discussions, by planning to build a potato PC, under $100 USD. You don't have to actually build it, but just list out what parts you would buy if you were to build one and the cost.
Rules:
  • New or manufacturer refurbished parts only. New-old-stock parts and parts sold at a discount are allowed. No auctions (unless you are actually planning on building it and won the auction)
  • Shipping fees and tax does not count towards the $100
  • Must work and run Windows 10 x86, and no single board computers like Atomic Pis or pre-built laptops.
  • Cost does not have to include a monitor, mouse, keyboard, and cords
  • Cheap Chinese parts are allowed although I would discourage buying cheap Chinese power supplies and building a PC with it as it can be a fire hazard
  • Case and anything else not mentioned is not required although you can get creative if you want
I guess we can judge each other by the best of the worst, or best PC at a ridiculously cheapo price.

    Rate mine:
    • Motherboard: Dell Optiplex 990 motherboard PGKWF 0PGKWF CN-0PGKWF - $14.99 (Newegg)
    • CPU: Intel Pentium G620T - $13.99 (Newegg)
    • CPU cooler: ARCTIC Alpine 12 LP - $10.99 (Amazon)
    • RAM: Patriot 4GB Signature DDR3L 1600 MHz - $17.99 (B&H)
    • Hard drive: Seagate Desktop HDD ST500DM002 500GB - $16.00 (Newegg)
    • Power supply: APEVIA VENUS450W - $25.99 (Amazon)
    • Case: USPS 12-14" x 12" x 6 Priority Mail Flat Rate Box - Free
    Total cost: $99.95
First I found the cheapest motherboard on Newegg by sorting lowest price first. I then found the cheapest compatible CPU that I can buy. Most of the other stuff is easier to find. I could have probably gone even cheaper with a 64 GB USB drive, but I later found a 500 GB HDD that isn't much more expensive. For the power supply, I was first looking at cheap Chinese power supplies, but then I decided that might be a fire hazard. I came across Apevia, which is a brand that at least has some presence, but I also heard about it being a pretty crappy brand. Mid way I was considering a graphics card, until I realized the motherboard doesn't have a PCIE slot, and also would be too much money.

Verdict, of course I'm not building this. Most of this is new-old stock stuff that's sold at cheap prices probably to get rid of existing inventory.

EDIT: had to remove the links due to the forum spam filter
