hey guys,

got my 1070 replaced for a 1080 march this year and it was running great, I gave it a little oc 100mhz on the core, 500mhz on the mem stable it boosted up to 2025/2050mhz consistantly in games without any issues, temps were nearly hitting 80c which was getting a bit hot imo, so I reapplied the thermal paste a few months back and the temps dropped to 68/70c. but the past few weeks the oc that was stable just isn't stable anymore, artifacting in everything once the core goes above 2000mhz? i've had to drop the core down to 70mhz. I don't know if another gpu is dying on me again or what. my old 1070 oc never gave me issues or had to drop the oc in anyway it was stable for years. don't know if I've just got a bad replacement card or what?

+100 MHz down to +70 MHz is really quite negligible. I wouldn't sweet it. A simple driver update could easily account for that small of a change.

something else to keep in mind is that when you remounted the cooler, you might not have the same quality of contact with the GPU die.  If thats the case, thermal paste could dry out pretty fast and that will lead to hot temps.

if your card is mounted vertically, that pump out and drying effect can happen fast.. like within weeks of a fresh application.

    good luck my friend.

Funny you say that, I reapplyed thermal paste again yesterday and now im able to put 110mhz on the core from 70mhz.

The gpu wasn't able to boost past 2000mhz at all or if it did it would artifact then crash but after reapplying thermal paste last night, tightening it up a bit more on the back so it's definitely made more of a contact im able to get up to 2050/2088mhz stable no crashing, no artifacting. using mx4 thermal past and temps haven't went past 62c.

i would say I got a decent enough contact before since temps barely went over 72c but it was the oc degrading that was confusing me and annoying me a bit but now the temps are crazy low so im guessing i've made a better contact on the chip, either that or i didn't screw the screws in tight enough so it's more flush to the backplate. but anyway much better oc now and temps compared to last time.

    thanks for that post :)
