Right now I've got an i7-8700K. I found a CPU list and it looks like that's the top one it supports, but the list was a couple years old so I just want to confirm that is still the case.

I play a lot of VR and thought a CPU upgrade might be nice to pair with my GTX 3070.

Thanks for any help.

With the newer BIOS' you can run any of the i9-9900's. Generally, they are terrible overclockers, so don't expect much more than stock.

Thank you! In spite of the classified motherboard, I'm not much of an overclocker these days. You think it's much of an upgrade?

It depends on how cheaply you can get an i9. There are 2 more cores and a bit of speed bump. In a VR rig I doubt it would give you much of boost. Anymore than a couple hundred dollars and I'd save my money for an intel 12th gen.

Here's your EVGA CPU compatiblity list EVGA - Support - Suggested CPU and Memory
Just click on your board .  Be sure to download and install the latest BIOS first .
It looks like you will need at least BIOS 1.12 for I9 9900K .

Very good. Thank you both. Looks like I'm probably best off waiting a bit longer and just doing the "big upgrade" - mobo, mem, cpu, reinstall all software (that last part is the part that makes me put it off the longest).

Looks like about a 10-15% performance increase (if I read this correctly) for about $350+
