Hi all, I walked into my office the other day and was greeted with a small cloud of smoke and the smell of burning plastic. Long story short, I discovered that the power cable on the back of my BluRay drive was melted, along with about 1/3 of the backside of said drive. My AIO, also connected to the same power cable (farther down the cable), was lit red, indicating failure, and neither of the radiator fans connected to it were running. Computer was on the whole time, and all other components are fine. Oh, and so are the radiator fans.
It seems to me that the power supply supplied WAY too much current to that one cable. I'm guessing there was some kind of short circuit in the cable/plug, the socket on the drive, or in the drive itself (and I found zero evidence of a leak from the AIO).
Is this much current normal? I thought these power supplies would be smart enough to know that peripherals wouldn't normally need that much power, and shut down on their own.
Should I replace the power supply at my earliest opportunity?
Thanks!
Rob
