BIOS starts without CMOS battery

..and asks for password. Shouldn't this be impossible?

    Not impossible if the password is saved to EEPROM or flash memory. It's a matter of implementation. When the password is just saved to CMOS -- which just requires removing the battery to remove the password -- it is a security problem (obviously).

    Think of it this way: when you remove the battery, you don't lose the firmware (BIOS or UEFI) and need to reflash it for the motherboard to work. Not all of it is volatile. It's just a matter of where the password is stored. If the password is stored in a non-volatile location, the password is not forgotten when the battery is removed.
