Hi all, new to forums. This whine started about 2 months back but I've been busy with life so I could not act on it. At first I thought it was the water cooling. It only would happen on boot.
Upon closer inspection, my worst fears came true, it turned out to be my 3080. It's only gotten worse unfortunately. I think it may be related to starting the fans - when I play a game, they are all maxed out - no whine. When the load is weak, it tends to whine after a while.

Anyway, I started an RMA process, but making sure this would be covered:
[Edit: Apparently no youtube vids; the link is v=1iSQZu9JlGc ; sorry if this breaks any rules, it's just an out-of-focus vid of the card whine]

Let me know what you think? Thanks for any votes of yea or nay.
[Edit2: Sorry, I meant to post this in /Warranty, not /Hardware, don't know how to move threads.]

EVGA will probably let you RMA your card about as many times as you want to - BUT there is NO guarantee any of the cards will not have coil whine and you will continually get back older, refurbed cards each time.  & each time paying more & more to ship the cards back ...

Me personally, coil whine doesn't bother me nor is it in any kind of way harmful nor indicate bad quality of the card....It is purely a luck of the draw.

Good luck on your decision.

Thanks for the fast reply. I was not aware that the cards they send back are refurbs and not either your old card, or a new card.

I think a valid RMA within the first 30 days or something - can be the only time you get a new in box replacement - but that always depends on inventory... which are extremely tight supply right now

The only time you are entitled a new card is within the first 30 days after purchase. After that period you will receive refurbished cards as RMA replacements. However as stated above coil whine isn't in any way harmful to your card and not indicative of a damaged or potentially dying card either. Most cards exhibit some degree of coil whine whether or not it's audible to you depends on a few factors like your case, where your PC is located or what type of load is applied to the card. The amount of current that passes through the inductors can cause the amplitude and frequency of the coil whine to change thus making it more audible. Coil whine is simply just copper coils in the inductors vibrating when an electrical current is passed through them. Most of the time the frequency is outside of our human ear's range to be able to hear it but the vast majority of cards do have coil whine to some degree.

I would try a different psu. Sometimes a different psu can correct the whine.

Somehow I am not entirely convinced it's simple coil whine. From the videos I found online, the coil whine is much more consistent and high pitched. If you listen to my video, it's much lower frequency and somewhat studdering sound even. Then again, this is the first time I've had a graphics card make noise outside of typical fans.

Coil whine isn't uniform or the same between cards even of the same make and model. The "stuttering" you are hearing are just current changes in the inductors. Your card is fine technically speaking.
