I heard that this is a high-risk, high-reward type of situation. If I have a beefy graphics card out of the box, is it recommendable to attempt overclocking?

why? if your hardware is beefy enough you shouldnt have to overclocked unless your like to push it to the limits. and then take your chances.

Unless you aim for a specific benchmark score the gains are usually not viable for everyday gaming.

Besides all GPUs nowadays have smart algorithms to boost on higher clocks given enough thermal headroom. Give it Power Limit above 100% and the algorithm will do the rest.

CPU overclocking is the same where it's better off for gaming to let the software handle the boost on its best cores again given enough thermal headroom.
All core overclocking will help benchmark scores and productivity applications that spread cpu load evenly across all cores.

People do overclock for mining. I do not think it is necessary to overclocking for gaming.

I thinky ou have that backwards.  They do underclocking and lower power limits for mining to get the most mh/s per watt.

May also for gaming, but I think is like to upgrade your 50cc.. is a sort of funny, not for really needs.

Got it, makes sense. But if i were to overclock, I assume that I would need a significant psu Correct?

Really the PSU as long as it's a quality brand probably has enough overhead for overclocking. The thing to remember about overclocking is you have the extreme overclocking that use crazy cooling and the best parts you can get to try to set world records. Then you have the people who buy a good case and PSU and just want to push the parts to what the cooling they have inside the system can handle. Running PX1 overclocking tuner won't hurt the card and can get you a bit of performance gain based on if you have good cooling and get lucky on what the GPU can handle. In the real world it probably is not going to really amount to more then a couple of extra frame per second but it's free.

The most important thing to do is read up first and understand it's something to overclock slowly and make sure it's stable using baby steps to see if things are still stable. If it's your first overclock I wouldn't touch the voltage setting at all. The real key to overclocking again is the baby steps like you are learning to walk and leave the Olympic athlete doing the triple jump type of overclocking to KINGPIN.
