does anyone have any tips on building a computer for the first time from scratch. I was going to buy a prebuild but i have decided against it. I want this to be a learning experience.

If you actually want to have a video card - then your best bet is only to buy prebuilds....

I personally recommend these 2x for great builds  &  service -

Read your motherboard's manual from front to back before you even pick up a screwdriver..Manuals are usually arranged in step-by-step assembly procedures..Manuals can be downloaded from the manufacturer's support page so you can read it even before you get the motherboard and get started..You'll also find the latest BIOS and drivers there too.

Check out pcpartpicker for pricing comparisons. Don’t skimp on a PSU and avoid used PSUs.

    My advice:
    • Don't rush
    • Don't be in a hurry
    • Think before you do something
    • Install the CPU before installing the motherboard (and preferably the CPU cooler as well, if possible).
    • Use air cooling for your first build (quite a bit easier).
    • Examine the motherboard carefully and determine where the cables will go before you install them (especially the case cables, which are often a faff to install). It's much easier to examine the motherboard before you have things installed.
    • Read the manual. Yes, really.
Many prebuilds are not very well done, so self-building is often better.
