wccftech - NVIDIA GeForce & AMD Radeon Graphics Cards Are Now Priced 70% Over MSRP, GPU Availability Worsens As We Enter Q4 2021 “It looks like the pricing and availability of NVIDIA GeForce & AMD Radeon graphics cards have gotten far worse as GPU shortages continue as we enter Q4 2021. The latest data comes from 3DCenter who has been doing a great job at providing a visual representation of graphics card pricing and availability within the European region. Despite things improving, it looks like as we move forward through 2021, the GPU availability & prices for NVIDIA GeForce and AMD Radeon graphics cards become worse than before. We saw some signs of improvement in Q2 but since then, the prices have continued to go up & now sit at an average of 70% markup over the MSRP. The GPU market has been trying to recover ever since the recent crypto boom and the COVID-19 supply constraints which have hampered the industry but that recovery is starting to come to a halt, as reported by 3DCenter in the latest statistics. Compared to early August, NVIDIA graphics cards are now 70% expensive (vs 59%) while AMD graphics cards are 73% expensive (vs 64%). It's a small increase but it breaks the downward trend of NVIDIA and is the largest increase in price since May 2021. What's worse is the fact that GPU supply is directly proportional to the pricing. We can see as the availability becomes worse, the prices start going up, and based on the trend, if this continues, then we can end up with 2x markup over MSRP by the beginning of Q4 2021. Certain SKUs such as the Radeon RX 6800, Radeon RX 6800 XT, Radeon RX 6800 XT, Radeon RX 6600 XT, GeForce RTX 3070 Ti, RTX 3080 & RTX 3090 are hard to find. The AMD Radeon RX 6800 (Non-XT) and RX 6600 XT are almost like they don't exist anymore since it's the hardest card to find right now. The Big Navi RX 6800 series also have the highest markups with prices 100% over the MSRP. Over at NVIDIA's front, the newly released GeForce RTX 3080 Ti is the only one that has less than 30% markup over MSRP but the situation worsens with the likes of the RTX 3080, RTX 3070, RTX 3060, & their respective Ti variants all of which are around the 50% markup range. Now, based on recent reports, it is likely that COVID-19 restrictions could once again result in limited production of graphics cards based on NVIDIA and AMD GPUs, hampering the recovery rate. Mainstream graphics cards such as the GeForce RTX 3060 series and Radeon RX 6600 XT could be severely affected by this. Furthermore, TSMC is expected to raise prices of 7nm chips which is what the RDNA 2 graphics cards are made on.” Monday’s not so good news, which shouldn’t surprise anyone. The shortage for all industries will continue probably, I believe, until well into 2022.

Even NVIDIA stated that the GPU shortage would continue into late 2022. Things aren't going to get better until demand decreases and quantities increase.

Unfortunately, this may extend into 2023. I know a lot of people are focusing on GPUs and seem to forget the broader impact of the shortage. I still think that an indication of normalcy is when you can walk into an auto dealer, spec out a vehicle for order, get a decent deal, and not get thrown out the door.

I was able to get a decent deal on a 2021 Nissan Rogue. Had worked with the dealership for over 20 years...three cars...got a decent discount. Two weeks later...same car, same features was almost $2000 more on the sticker. The situation may get worse, before it gets better

I still remember the days when the top of the series cards were consistently sold at MSRP at any retailer. Those were the good times.

I remember the days when people were willing to not buy a video card. More video cards have been produced this generation than ever before. But still the demand remains off the charts. What do you blame? The demand. Consumers willing to pay scalping prices is the reason prices are above MSRP. It is also the reason why the next generations will have a high MSRP. Consumers bring it upon themselves. Gamers are consumers. Miners are consumers. No need to get caught up in categorizing or dividing people. Bottom line is that all consumers are bringing this upon themselves.

I mostly agree with this yeah. But you can't expect the average consumer to wait 4 or 5 years for something. That's a significant amount of someone's life.

Why not? They don't need it. There's much more to life. Maybe that's the root issue: in the past, the majority had other hobbies or had other struggles to focus on. Instead, this generation grew up with this hobby being common-place, had school or work off for pandemic reasons, were convinced that it was acceptable or normal to put life and work on hold, and had uncle sam giving out a lot of pitty cash. That's a significant amount of someone's life. Hardly. And it's not a choice between a GPU and no GPU; it's a choice between an older GPU vs a new GPU. It's hardly going to affect the majority in a legitimately negative way. I am rocking a 5-year-old GPU. The only negative affect on me, is my worry and fear watching consumers destroy their market. I will almost certainly be back in the market some day; what hellish landscape will they have left for me?

There is absolutely nothing we can do about the chip shortage including GPUs, so why raise your blood pressure and mental angst? The current situation will be rectified eventual, but it may take a year or more. There is no quick panacea for the shortage. The shortage had been building for more than a decade due to the increasing demand across all industries and the pandemic just accelerated it. So now construction of badly needed fabs has begun and they will be online in two to three years. As @ty_ger07 said, there is a lot more to life than a GPU, it is not a raison d'être.

I have heard real sources from Nvidea Dell and Hp saying that the shortage will continue untill Q2 2022. I think that there might be a bigger chance of gpu stocks at the end of 2021 (launch of ethereum 2.0 --> no crpyto mining).

It sure is the demand that is the problem, but a casual gamer is not buying all the 600-800 EUR low-middle range 3060s. It is the damn cryptominers. And before you say its not cryptominers, how come that GPUs stay longer in stock when etherium price drops ? Magic ? I am still on a 960, a low-mid range card that i paid 220 EUR for. Even a 3060 at about 4xx EUR is a stretch for me if i could get the queue email (but in EU queue so don't have much hope ...) since its supposed to be the same "level" of card for 100% more money. BTW: Don't come at me with 3060 is more than X times faster than 960 so its worth it. If that was your argument we would be paying more than 10000 EUR for GPUs today since they are so much better than Geforce 2 and Riva TNT were 20 years ago, and they werent cheap then. Plus the inflation was not that high during these 5 years to justify this.

Historically, that is the segment which sells the most to gamers. So, it would be expected to see the same again. You would need firm evidence to prove the contrary.
