EVGA Reveals that Bad Soldering Was the Culprit behind Bricked RTX 3090 Cards | TechPowerUp When Amazon Studios released the closed beta for their upcoming New World MMO users begun to report that the game was causing catastrophic failure of their RTX 3090 graphics cards. This issue appears to have disproportionately affected EVGA cards with initial analysis indicating that the cause could have been with the fan controller malfunctioning evident by the bad readings received from third-party monitoring tools. This behavior was determined to not be the cause of card failures with monitoring working correctly when using the EVGA Precision X1 software. EVGA found that the fan controller issue was related to noise on the communication bus which their software could filter out and have released a micro-controller update that fixes monitoring with third-party tools. The cause of the dead cards has now been determined by EVGA to be the result of a rare soldering issue limited to a small batch of cards. EVGA performed X-ray analysis on a selection of broken cards returned to them and found that the soldering around the MOSFET circuits had "poor workmanship". EVGA also confirmed that this issue was only present on early production runs in 2020 and affects less than 1 percent of all the RTX 3090 cards manufactured by the company. Amazon Game Studios have also added a frame limiter to New World that will ensure this issue won't appear in new versions of the game. So now we know the cause but the issue only affected less than 1 percent of the manufactured cards.

Thank you for the post RJ. Kudos for EVGA finding the culprit of the problem. Like i said before this was a manufacturing problem. Nvidia is to blame, ye😼. Insert Cat jam emoji😸

Hi, 1 % is very small but is there a way we can check if our cards was made during that batch ? New world is not my type of video game but still ... i'm kinda worried now... thanks in advance

Is bad soldering also the problem with the ones that have low power on one of the three power cables? @Nitz30, there is a revision number on the PCIx finger that goes in the slot. I don't remember the earlier number atm, but you will have to pull the card out to see it. Might be 001 or similar. EDIT: Ty_ger know the revisions. Posted below. :)

I still don't believe the story. Soldering was the only reason .... right.... and 1%... right.... Isn't it weird that Rev 0.1 has problems for so many people, but Rev 1.0 rarely does? Wouldn't it be weird if only Rev 0.1 had soldering problems? Wouldn't it be weird if EVGA made a Rev 0.1 to Rev 1.0 transition for no apparent reason and soldering was the only cause of these cards' problems?

An tiny number of some brands and models, a huge number of another brand and a specific board revision of that brand. You understand my point? I would look at that specific old board revision -- that no one officially wants to talk about -- and ask what is specifically different about it. It can't be simply that every card affected in that revision pool had bad soldering. There is a reason that a revision was released. What is the reason? What changed? Why are people still getting that old revision via RMA, having that old revision fail on them again, having to RMA again, and having to specifically ask that they receive a new revision version? The EVGA 3090 FTW3 Rev 0.1 has a problem. Always has. They were failing in the same way a year ago. A revision was created for a reason. It's not just a small batch with a soldering problem. It is deception. I will accept that some had a soldering problem, but I will not accept that it is the full story.

So with this setback EVGA is looking into selling AMD GPUs right?🤔. I find it extremely peculiar that it is only the EVGA batch of GPUs received from Nvidia and not the rest of 3rd parties Vendors having these issues.🤔

And I stand by my comment: If you buy a walmart psu, expect walmart results. I have a card I got 4 to 5 days after card release. Still trucking along. If you think none of these issues were user error or hardware cheaping out problems, you have another think coming.

I don't think I saw anyone say a hardware defect was the sole reason. I saw lots saying there was no way there was a hardware defect. Yes some users broke their cards but I'd be willing to place a pretty hefty wager that way more were literally bad hardware. And I'm still trucking along almost a year later on my rmx850 and 3090 ftw3 / Gen 1 Threadripper with a crazy amount of hours. Also weird EVGA still hasn't upped that minimum psu requirement. Hmmm.
