About to build a new PC using the Z590 Dark.
I already have 2x M.2 drives and I was thinking i may run out of space down the line.

Use the third M.2 slot or get a SATA drive ?

personally i'd use the third M.2 slot for aesthetics, minimize cables!

If you want big, you can get a 2.5" 4TB SATA SSD for ~$380 where a good 4TB NVMe drive will run you at least $475-500. So if you're just looking for major storage, SATA is still a good option. At 2TB, they are really close now (~$170 vs ~$185 on Newegg right now) and when you consider how much faster the NVMe drive is, it's a no brainer if you have room for it. That said, I have no idea what pricing is where you are and haven't done much research into longevity comparisons of the two drive types in a long time (this is why I was keeping an eye on this thread for a few days hoping others would chime in lol).

I probably should have worded the question a bit more 😅

My main issue was I have seen a lot of people occupy one or maybe two slots, but rarely all of them and to make up for space throw in Standard SSD’s or HDD’s.

It could be due to cost, but i was wondering if the temperatures of the drives being so tight together have much affect on one another but thinking about it... they don’t all run maxed out at the same
time so can’t be that.

Maybe limitations to using all slots at the same
time. ie certain PCI Lanes being used up or other SATA ports or U.2 ports become redundant.

But from spending a few days watching youtube now and reading the manual over and over.

I have accepted to just place 3 x M.2 drives in.
1. Because I won’t have to do it later which will require draining the loop and removing the GPU
2. No extra cables (SATA Cables) - neatness
3. Adding in an SSD via SATA is quick/convenient enough if i ever need to add the space.
4. SPEEEEED
5. I also won’t be needing the use of the U.2 Slot or the PE3 (4x PCI lane) which are disabled using the PM2 and PM3 slot on the Z590 Dark.
6. Lifespan is roughly 1.75 Million hours of each drive.

In Aus it is a little more costly here than the US. Varies from $20-$100 more per drive.

I occupied only 2 of the slots, so I can run the EVGA Sound Card

Keep in mind that it looks like to use the top most it would take an 11th generation Intel cpu to have the PCIe support. As for heat I don’t think you would run into an issue. Personally though I might go SATA since SSD prices normally are a big better that way and for storing files sometimes size is more important then speed since any SSD is going to be pretty fast.

to average consumers not much of a difference, but when you add high end studio monitors you can tell

I just wanted a sound card because I’m a EVGA fan boy hahaha

I would do what ever floats your boat. SSD vs nvme doesnt gain you much in games depends on what you want to do with your PC
