Hey all,

I've discovered another issue with my setup. I seem to be getting spammed with WHEA-Logger warnings in my Windows log. It seems to appear after coming back from stand-by It's doing it on fresh restarts now as well. The PCI Express root port it complains about has my EVGA 3080 FTW3 plugged into it. If I restart the PC I am not getting these warning logs. Would this be an issue with the NVIDIA driver?

This is happening with a vanilla install of Windows 10 (21H1), Latest NVIDIA Driver, and all other drivers installed from EVGA's website. No other software installed.

Hardware:
Mobo: EVGA z590 FTW
CPU: 11700k (no OC currently)
GFX: EVGA 3080 Ultra FTW3
Memory: Corsair 2x16 Vengeance 3200 ddr4
Boot Drive: WD SN850 1tb
PSU: EVGA 1300 G2

Looking forward to hearing from you all. Thank you so much for reading and helping out!

Thanks for the link. I've been reading different threads on the forums and I'm a bit confused on the causes. Is it accurate to say that it could be caused by one or more of these three things?
    1) BIOS update needed (I'm on latest BIOS)
    2) NVIDIA driver update needed or need to wait for newer version
    3) Hardware instability / may need an RMA?

I've seen a few of your replies in different threads and I'm wondering if I'm headed down the road of an RMA?

WHEA errors do point to hardware instability. A older/newer bios could resolve the issue. It could also be a hardware issue that could be resolved by switching to another motherboard. One user in the thread I linked said the issue went away after getting a different motherboard from another brand. EVGA_JacobF even said the issue was resolved in a new bios update for the op’s board in the link I provided.

I just ran into this on a z590 DARK. Doing a DDU and reinstall of driver resolved for me!

Was that the graphics card driver you're referring to?

Yes but disregard. Went a few hours without errors and then they started again. Have tried across both of the most recent two bios versions. Will continue troubleshooting

Yeah I just did DDU as well. I'm still getting the same warning in the logs. It seems fine sometimes when I reboot and let the machine sit there but if I come back from stand-by that's when it really starts spewing. This isn't always the case though as it has happened on fresh reboots while sitting idle. I'm at a loss as to what may be the cause.

Are you using a riser cable? Or direct to mobo? I am using the Lian Li pci-e 4.0 riser cable. I switched to a different 3090 and observed the same errors. So my next few things to try:
    • Swap riser cable
    • Try direct connection
    • Try PEG2 slot
    • Sob into my pillow

No riser cables; I'm plugged directly into the mobo. I've re-seated the 3080 as well. For a while I thought it was this whole RvRLA.exe issue with it taking 8% of my cpu power consistently when it detects iCUE but even after disabling iCUE I get the error after a few hours. I've tried reinstalling Precision X1 and loading defaults on the card as well, no luck.

Here's the supporting article from NVIDIA's forums for the RvRLA issue:

This is absolutely not a "solution" but I set my PEG1 port to Gen 3 and errors have not yet started rolling in. Will continue to monitor.

I've reset everything to default in the bios and just changed the xmp profile for the ram. No other OCs. I wonder if a bios update is needed? I have not tried setting the PCI-e to auto though. Wonder what would happen?

I never got the error while hardcoding to Gen3. I just rebooted and hardcoded it to Gen4 and within seconds of getting into Windows, the errors started rolling in.

Update: in Nvidia Control Panel, I set power mgmt to prefer max performance and haven't gotten an error yet.

I've set that too and get the same results :(

EDIT: In fact I'm getting 4 errors at the same exact time once I set that.

Interesting. What about your Win10 power / performance profile? I have mine set to Balanced right now but thinking about trying to disable the power mgmt / sleep settings for pci-express to see if that makes an impact.

I'm set to high performance and PCI link state is off. Still spewing the warning.

EDIT: Since you have a Dark board, I wonder if we're slightly different due to slightly different BIOS versions?

P.S. Thank you so much for helping! I'm glad we can troubleshoot this together!

Okay so I am starting to think this may be at least partially due to a bios bug? My above troubleshooting was on my second bios running v 1.0.3. I just switched to bios 1 and updated to 1.0.4 and now it's only negotiating my GPU at gen4 8x instead of 16x.

I just updated to BIOS 1.06 for the Z590 FTW and same results. Did a memtest as well, passed that. Changed the PCI slot to Auto instead of GEN4, same results. I'm not sure at this point if it's faulty boards or just needs BIOS attention...

EDIT: And like you said switching to GEN3 solves the issue...

Okay I feel like it has to be a bios issue at this point. Additional observations:
    • Issue persists across different pci-e 4.0 riser cables
    • Issue persists if gpu is directly connected
    • Issue persists across both z590 DARK 1.0.3 and 1.0.4
    • Issue persists across multiple ftw3 ultra 3090 cards I have available to me
    • Issue persists across both the Normal and OC bios on the cards
    • Have tried DDU and install + old nvidia drivers
    • If running the top pcie4 port on Gen4, there *seems* to be a roll of the die on whether or not it negotiates x16 vs x8 across both bois versions and multiple cards. The errors in event log occur regardless of x8 or x16
    • Forcing Gen3 in bios seems to be only way to avoid these errors

So I'm not celebrating yet .. but I decided to fully power down and unplug from power ... wait 30 min .. plug back in and boot to bios .. still showing 8x. So I did a clear cmos and reconfigured my settings / oc and rebooted. So far it's showing as 16x on gen4 and haven't seen one of those errors occur YET.

Do you let your pc go into stand-by? I'm curious if the warnings return after waking the pc up.

I've set mine to GEN3 for now while I wait for a new RAM kit to test.

I've made zero progress on getting this warning to disappear. Updating or downgrading the BIOS and clearing CMOS still yields the same result :(

EDIT: A side tangent but I've noticed weird behavior in general with this hardware, I use Autodesk's Maya for work and I've noticed I crash to desktop consistently trying to use anything Python module related. I'm trying to track down if its GFX related, Mobo, CPU or RAM. I've been having a bad experience since I've upgraded to 11th gen. I'm still trying to piece together if this could be related. Maybe I have a bad CPU?

    Hey all,

I wanted to provide an update. I completed an RMA and swapped the motherboard but I'm still hitting this issue (along with the sound popping).

I've gone through and run tests on the RAM with memtest and windows built in ram test. I've also booted with only one stick and tested with that. Everything's a pass. (And even swapped with a replacement kit which passed too)
I've tested the CPU with Prime95 (with and without AVX). I let those run for 2 hours on each test. Everything passed. No hard locks or crashes.
I'm currently running FurMark on my EVGA 3080 FTW3 Ultra (LHR). I'll keep you updated there.

I'm at a loss here as my graphics drivers will randomly crash while working in Autodesk's Maya. I've done a clean install of Windows and NVIDIA's drivers and verified with "sfc /scannow".

It seems the only stability I can get is if I change my PCI gen type to GEN3. Could this point to a bad 3080?

EDIT: FurMark ran for 2 hours, no locks or driver crashes.

I don’t think it’s a bad 3080. If it’s a bad 3080 the issue should show up in another rig that has no issues.

Think I narrowed it down to a setting in BIOS.

I think it's triggered when Resizable Bar is Enabled in the PCI Settings. If I toggle it off the WHEA-logger warnings disappear!

I'm going to keep it off for now as everything seems stable. I'll be keeping an eye on any BIOS updates though, wonder if there's just a bug with Resizable Bar currently on the z590 FTW?

This issue is still happening. Just returned computer from sleep and now I'm getting spammed every 30 seconds with the same WHEA-Logger warning.

I saw that I had a couple of the WHEA errors. I had to roll back my 3080ti VBIOS and put the new one on again for unrelated reasons, but it seems like this error is gone for me now. It was only happening once per boot, not every 30 seconds like you're seeing, so I'm not sure if it is related.

Those are the default VBIOS. I had to roll back to the one there, then let Precision X1 update it to the latest version again.

Officially angry. Swapped in a brand new EVGA 1000w P6 power supply, reverted and updated the vbios for the EVGA 3080 FTW3 Ultra and still the same darn thing. The only two things I have not swapped out at this point are the GFX card and the CPU. CPU passes everything I can throw at it so that's not it?

Would love to hear from any official response.

EDIT: More googling the issue and seems like Gigabyte boards are also experiencing this:
