After a year of happy audio performance using Line In and Line Out, with thanks to the Linux firmware provided by EVGA, I upgraded to Xubuntu 21.04 (using kernel 5.11.0-22 and Alsa Driver k5.11.0-22-generic).  Now, one good thing and one Very Bad Thing happens:
  • Good thing:  card is recognized in Linux even with the v32 firmware shared with Windows.
  • Very Bad Thing:  as soon as the volume is changed, all output stops.  Machine must be rebooted to get sound back.
Does not matter whether the volume is changed directly with Alsamixer or with PulseAudio.
The card is nearly unusable.
Anyone else had the problem?  Better yet, anyone else solved this problem?

Have you reported the bug? Perhaps you know all about doing so already, but just in case, I wouldn't bother reporting it to a distro bug tracker. Instead go straight to the maintainer. If it's a kernel problem, then get some advice from an expert in your favorite distro but my guess would be report it to the appropriate kernel mailing list. If userspace, Alsa itself might be a good start. Guidance here: https://www.alsa-project.org/wiki/Bug_Tracking

Then again you could ignore everything I've just said and follow this advice: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingSoundProblems

If it's a kernel problem, it persists in 5.11, and 5.13.  Xubuntu current kernel is 5.11.0-22.  I've loaded 5.11.20, and 5.13.2.  Same issue happens with all three.  I reported w/ Ubuntu bug reporter but of course, no response.  It would be really helpful to know if anyone else has seen the same issue after moving to ubuntu 21.04

Yes this was exactly as I feared. Best to go straight to the maintainer, and not the distro kernel folks, who are in any case totally overwhelmed by a deluge of bug reports.

It may well be that the problem is in ALSA and not the kernel. Perhaps try the ALSA project first, and see what feedback you get from them.

You can always use a Live Ubuntu ISO via a USB stick to test 21.04 without installing it. Very handy for evaluating hardware support before installation!

I finally got around to testing this myself. It works for me on Ubuntu 21.04, both via a live USB and via an install. However,  I needed to disable the proprietary Nvidia driver's HDMI audio for the EVGA audio even to show up. Which is a pain.

Exactly the same as my system.  What firmware is on your Nu?

tried with 0.32 and the 0.02 Linux variant.  same result as before.   It seems somehow to be related to USB?  If I disable legacy USB support in the mobo BIOS, the Nu stops working completely.  If I enable, it works until I change the volume.  Maybe this is a personal problem w/my hardware. :|

I have no idea if I have legacy USB support enabled! Out of curiosity, what motherboard are you using? I'm using a Gigabyte X570 AORUS PRO WIFI. Bios support from Gigabyte has been excellent for what I need it for.

Asus Prime B450 Plus, AMD 2600 CPU.  Nothing special.
