California Has new power regulation coming effective December 2021 that affect gaming PC's.
Dell has on their web site that they will not ship Alienware PC to 6 states

quote: "This product cannot be shipped to the states of California, Colorado, Hawaii, Oregon, Vermont or Washington due to power consumption regulations adopted by those states. Any orders placed that are bound for those states will be canceled."

here is the web site https://www.dell.com/en-us/shop/cty/pdp/spd/alienware-aurora-r12-desktop?~ck=mn
https://www.theregister.com/2021/07/26/dell_energy_pcs/

There is a video on Youtube video about this.

Has anyone else heard about this?

Will this effect EVGA Power supplies?

Personally I wouldn't worry that much since Intel is headquartered in San Jose California. So I am sure the largest CPU manufacture for desktops is well aware of the new requirements. NVIDIA also is in California in Santa Clara so I can see Intel and NVIDIA wanting to run high end desktops which means power requirement changes.

I wonder if the new ATX12VO specifications is the solution to this legislation.

Here is an interesting article concerning ATX12VO:  https://overclock3d.net/reviews/power_supply/atx12vo_tested_-_the_future_of_power_supplies/1

It seems a whole bunch of the article was purposefully skipped to push the “effect”.

Yes, this was driven by the California Energy Commission (CEC) Tier 2 implementation that defined a mandatory energy efficiency standard for PCs – including desktops, AIOs and mobile gaming systems. This was put into effect on July 1, 2021. Select configurations of the Alienware Aurora R10 and R12 were the only impacted systems across Dell and Alienware.

The good news is that the Aurora builds have been getting absolutely terrible reviews, so that means they are saving a lot of people from purchasing a bad built pre-built system. That isn’t a problem, that is a good thing, even if accidental.

As far as we have heard this would only affect certain prebuilt or preconfigured PCs, but we do not have confirmation as of yet. We do not have any reason to believe this will affect the sales of individual parts, or anyone who would be building/upgrading their own PC. We should know more, as more information becomes available on this matter.

I am glad I held off and did not buy, tempted to buy just so I could get a 3090 system but after thinking about it and just... holy crap I can not imagine how hot those components get in that little case.

After checking with our Product Management team, this will not impact EVGA directly, as it doesn't effect individual components.

Just to add to this, these sorts of regulations are generally well-known to the industry years before they ever come into effect.  Affected companies will have already modified their product lineups or policies to be in compliance, so there won't be any surprises there, either.  Tech writers, on the other hand, don't usually pay attention to this kind of thing until they suddenly see something surprising or people complain.

one way around it would be for PCs to be shipped with no video card preconfigured and have the consumer install it.   I don't know.  This is stupid

Yep, it's definitely needed too. Clean energy initiatives should already be national, but progress on this stuff is slow.

Have you read the regulation or are you just going off the thread title? Just curious, because it doesn’t seem like many people know what they are talking about and just keep injected really skewed opinions that have nothing to do with truth.

This was brought up on the forums in 2016 when it was first "passed" and so many called it political bs that would never get enforced. Here we are.

This is the slippery slope I always warn about. First its ban something small that few would object to, then regulate something larger, then become the leader of a group of states so that whatever BS the group thinks up the others do. Eventually one state gets to the point that they can regulate something and enough states fall in line that manufactures just accept it no matter how stupid it is. California and overreach are about as synonymous as summer and iced tea in the south. The majority is always okay with things being banned until it affects them directly. Unfortunately at that point its often too late.

California is a cancer. Idk what the cure is, but I sure wish it would appear sooner rather than later. Tired of so much of the country falling inline with their crap. Especially CARB which isn't even a federal thing, but a bunch of states and the EPA lose their minds to fall over backwards to accept any random trash idea they come up with. I swear California could ban all travel over 10 miles and private property ownership as well as start enforcing bi weekly lockdowns to curb climate change and not only would half a dozen to a dozen states fall over themselves to follow suit, the 9th court would uphold it as a valid constitutional law.

I really wish that manufactures would just start cutting off states that do this kind of stuff. Eventually when they are years behind other states in terms of capability maybe they will learn not to do this.

Personally I find it hilarious that the state pushing hardest to force everyone to electric cars is enforcing power consumption requirements on computers.

/ political rant sorry but California needs to bugger off.

BTW this is the same reason why I cant officially buy a lot of EATON UPS units in Colorado right now. All of them dont meet energy efficiency requirements. But its perfectly fine for me to have to spend 2x as much on the new model. Wonder if the new model lasts as long too, usually when these rules get forced on companies and they start making new versions they seem to have a shorter lifespan whether planned or not.

If I didn't have a job and had more patience to deal with the public, I'd run for State office on the platform that we rename Colorado New California. Given the droves that are escaping California only to come here and vote for the same type of people, in some cases the exact same people that pushed the policies that made them leave California, I would probably win as long as I run in the Denver Metro area.

Those who abuse power, are nothing but scumbags! The challenge of power is how to use it and not abuse it. The abuse of power that seems to create the most unhappiness is when a person uses personal power to get ahead without regards to the welfare of others, people are obsessed with it. You can take a nice person and turn them into a slob, into an insane being, craving power, destroying anything that stands in their way.

[sarcasm]I ship from the Free State of Florida. Stocking up on 1600w power supplies now.

I can use discreet packaging to make it look like a small lawn mover[/sarcasm]

Maybe CA could source some extra power via methane from all the turds just laying around in the streets.

Hmm, back with another video looking into the facts and it turns out, the whole “gaming PCs are getting banned” was a lie. Weird that these click bait sites keep producing clickbait to get clicks and fund their ad revenue.

Nothing weird about it - mainstream media have been doing this for years.
