Hi everyone, this is my first post and I apologize if this question has been addressed elsewhere. I didn't find it in any searches here on the EVGA forums so I thought I'd go ahead and ask.

I have an Alienware Aurora R8 (it's from late 2018), and I'm currently on notify queues for the 3080, 3080 Ti, and 3090. I'm open to purchasing any of these models when available, but it appears the 3090 would be a tight fit for the R8 at the very least, and Dell forum users have reported that they have cut their Alienware Aurora cases to make it fit.

As a followup question, are any of the 3080/3080 Ti variants (such as the Ultra Hybrid versions) also tight fits in computer cases?

I appreciate any insights, and let me know if I can provide any other info. Thanks so much!

Ben

If you look at the GPU's and go the the Specs page for a specific GPU you can get the measurements of the card and compare that to your case.  The FTW cards (all makes) I believe in general are longer, taller and wider (3 slot cards).  I believe all the FTW variants (3090, 3080, 3080ti) are roughly the same size given the cooler design.  The XC series are not as tall/wide and I believe are only 2 slot cards.

X299 System:
Windows 10 Pro 64-bit | Intel Core i9 7900x (4.4 GHz)| ASUS Rampage VI
Extreme | 32 GB 3200 G.SKILL TridentZ RGB
Corsair 900D | Corsair AX 1200i PSU | Corsair H115i Elite Capellix (in Push/Pull) | EVGA RTX 3090 FTW3 Ultra & 1080 8 GB
Samsung 870 PRO 2 TB | Samsung 850 EVO 500 GB | Intel 520 SATA SSD 240GB HD | 2 & 4 TB WD Black Hard Drive
Creative Sound Blaster Z | Logitech THX 5.1 speaker setup | LG Blu-ray burner | Corsair AF 120 and 140 Fans
Acer x34 Predator (G-Sync) | 2 x Samsung SyncMaster PX2370

Re: Alienware R8 and R9 Graphic card max length?

12" will not fit.  I just measured it.  The length of the case from one side to the other side of the case is 11."  That would leave 0" for airflow between the top and bottom of the case.   If you removed the front fan, that would get you an extra 2.5 cm, but then you'd have no front fan either.  Also, you need to keep in mind the card width needs to be under 4.25" for the case to be able to close.

Thanks again for the replies. I measured the Aurora R8 case and it appears that a card less than 11" in length will be the safest option if I want to add a card without modifying the case. That suggests to me that I should set my sights on the XC3 Hydro Copper line, in which the length of the cards is less than 10.5". I realize I'll have to operate it with a custom watercooling loop, but it'll be worth it.

Unfortunately, I learned that it won't be possible for me to fit a liquid-cooled 3090 into my Alienware Aurora R8, at least without major case modification. I'm told that the case doesn't accommodate the required 240 mm radiator, and there just isn't enough space for the other non-liquid-cooled cards.

This is why I am not pulling a trigger on the alienware with the 3090.  That thing will just turn into a mini space heater direct from the fires from Hell.

Has anyone come up with a good solution for this? I'm trying to replace my OEM card that burned out.

Aurora R8 owner here!
I removed the front case fan and put a thinner version between the metal casing and the front plastic outer case.
Once i did that, I was able to fit an Asus Tuf 3090 OC into the case, with 6-7mm to spare on the length, but only 2.3mm to spare on the height.
Running Furmark, the GPU temps never get above 69C
I've added a bunch of tiny Noctua fans to the inside of the side of the case (4 intake, 4 exhaust) They pull fresh air in towards the bottom of of the vent and expell the hot air above.

Currently working on a plan to get a 4090 FE (smallest 4090 by size) into the chassis. Metal snips will be required for that though. I believe it'll still fit length-wise, but the height is where I need to modify the case. Oh, and I'm planning to upgrade the PSU from 850w -> 1000w+

Here's a reddit thread with a bunch of back and forth between me and the person who I mostly copied. I can't link directly (I'm new here), but search for "How I make my 3080 work under 65° on full load."
