So. Since getting a 3000 series card I have
A. donated both of my 970's. As one does.
B. donated both of my 1080's. As one does.

Enter friend #5 who has been waiting for 3060 or 3070 for....well, you know how that goes.
Said friend knows I have a bins and bins of old parts, begs me to give him a Graphics card. Any card.
I thought I had an old 780 somewhere.
So I started digging, and found that I still have...THIS BEAST. From the time when Dinosaurs ruled the Earth.
And a mighty beast it was. But...should I give it to him?

I wouldn't. Thats the last dual gpu card Nvidia made, and unless he really knows what he's doing and has the appropriate hardware to run it cool and filters to keep it clean, it will get ruined quick. Not to mention all the rig diagnosing you'll be doing. That is a card for the special few enthusiasts.

I think that's my personal sticking point right there. It was his first build, a competent-enough contemporary 10600k job with a 700w modular, nvme OS, etc.
Everything there except that big gaping hole where a GPU should be. Like a surgery patient cut open and no heart.

I foresee spending an unfortunate amount of time trying to deconflict SOMETHING that doesn't like a decade old card.

I wouldn't give it to him because it's rare or something, no I wouldn't give it to him because SLI is dead these days and further more, Nvidia is ending driver support for the Kepler series cards with the 470.XX drivers due out very soon. Yes, it's a single card but it uses SLI to operate it's dual GPU configuration and as such is bound by the same performance scaling as any conventional SLI setup. It would perform about as well as a single GTX 680 in most games (read: bad) and driver support ends probably next month anyway.

Intel i9 14900K ...............................Ryzen 9 7950X3D
MSI RTX 4090 Gaming Trio................ASRock Phantom RX 7900 XTX
Samsung Odyssey G9.......................PiMax 5K Super/Meta Quest 3
ASUS ROG Strix Z690-F Gaming........ASUS TUF Gaming X670E Plus WiFi
64GB G.Skill Trident Z5 6800Mhz.......64GB Kingston Fury RGB 6000Mhz
MSI MPG A1000G 1000w..................EVGA G3 SuperNova 1000w

The GTX 690 wasn't the last GX2 / Dual GPU card from NVIDIA actually that was the GTX TITAN Z Actually
This was a single PCB with Dual GTX TITAN Blacks and a tri-slot cooler, my friend JayVenturi had two of these in Quad SLI in his Dual 28 Core Intel Xeon 8180M Platinum system.
https://www.techpowerup.com/gpu-specs/geforce-gtx-titan-z.c2575

More of it here:
https://www.extremetech.c...5x2-is-a-better-choice

Each card has a GK102-400-B1 GPGPU each with 2880 Kepler CUDA Cores and each GPU has 6144MB 384Bit GDDR5.
if SLI was used well tone of these could beat a GTX 1080 in many cases by 5 a 8% which, was pretty amazing.

The TITAN Z wasn't cheap though, well as usual, back in those times I ran Dual EVGA GTX 680 SC Sig 2GB's in 2-Way SLI in my Dual 6 Core OpteronDP 2435 D0 Workstation in a Supermicro H8DAE-2, this was a lovely combination as well here a photo of that build that I took back in 2010:

I decided we would give it a shot anyways. His 700w PSU proved sufficient.
So I cleaned it up, plugged it in, did the driver dance, and turns out: It's getting the same frame rates as my GTX 970 was in CoD: Infinite Warfare against bots. Display used was a 30" 60hz 2560x1600 over Dual Link DVI. Ended up being a good display/GPU pairing, and definitely outperformed what a single 680 would muster. SLI still paying off, & not a hint of stutter.
Not too shabby for something a decade old. Decided he can use it until the chip shortage insanity ends. It'll get him by for now as long as his gaming expectations remain realistic.
