IBM model M. Until you've used one you just can't understand how good they are. Beefy, roomy, true mechanical keys and lots of response from the keys. If your a heavy typer you'll love it. The only drawback is that the ones made by IBM are getting really rare now and cost a fortune.

Definitely love my Corsair keyboard although never tried an EVGA one. Before that was always Microsoft natural keyboards.

I use a Razer Huntsman Tournament Edition. It's by far the best keyboard I've used for gaming.

The keys are very sensitive though. It took me some time to get used to it for normal use.

Best keyboard depends on what you want. But if you aren’t that picky/specific then any name/reputable brand should be alright.

I'm using the Corsair K70 MK2 and it fits my needs quite well.  The keyboard is also easy to keep clean.

I originally had the TTe Sports Poseidon Z with Brown switches...loved it.  Had a chance to get the EVGA Z15 with Speed Silver switches.  I have to say that getting used to it was quick and the feel is good.  Not as clicky as my brown switch keyboard...but the tactile feel is nicer.  In addition...I commend EVGA for writing software where I can re-assign keys to functions.  Not all keyboard companies do this.  I am left handed and always use the arrow keys for forward, back, left and right.  I have some games that required WSAD and could not play them.  With the Z15...I re-assigned the WSAD to up, down. left and right in my second profile.  I have about four working profiles and different color schemes to go with each...so I don't get caught short.  The EVGA keyboards may not be the most expensive...but for me...they work perfectly for what I want.

MSI MAG X570 Tomahawk;  Ryzen 9 5950X; Asus TUF RTX 4070 TI OC; Corsair H115i Pro; 32 GB  Crucial Ballistix Elite DDR4-3600; Western Digital Black 4 TB SN850X NVMe; Creative SoundBlaster Z; Corsair HX 850i;  Lian Li Lancool II;  EVGA Z15
RGB Keyboard; and Razer Viper 8K Mouse

Honestly, for mechanical keyboards it is not only the brand but also the switches. So far I am using a Tecware Phantom 87 with Outemu Browns and so far it is good. Previously, I had an older Reddragon mechanical keyboard which I forgot the model of and they don't make anymore with Outemu Blues which was fine but then the keys started to fade. It is a matter of what kind of key switches you like and then finding which keyboard offers the features you like and fits your budget.

Re: Best keyboard 2021/07/28 14:20:46 (permalink)
The key question here is: Best keyboard for what?

For most gamers, any cheap mechanical keyboard is going to be a big improvement over a membrane keyboard.

If you have never used a mechanical keyboard before, you can buy switch testers to figure out what you prefer when it comes to spring weight, tactile feel, and clicky sound. In the before-times, you could go to an electronics store and physically touch the keyboards. Now, I'd say figure out what switch you like and order a cheap mechanical one to see how you like it first.

I've gone through 6 keyboards now, and my latest top priorities are a tie between tactile response and ergonomics. It helps me to feel when a key actuates, so I use brown switches. Some people swear by linear keys, but they just aren't for me.

Bigger/more isn't always better: I used a big macro keyboard for several years and didn't ever use more than 2 macro keys. They are heavy, take up a ton of desk real estate, and are a pain in the ass if you're moving your gaming setup.

Faster/lighter isn't always better: I used the Corsair K70 Rapidfire for a few years. It's got linear switches that actuate at 1.2mm instead of the typical 2mm. The build quality of the keyboard is great, but I'm an ape with clumsy monkey hands. I would accidently type things when barely resting my hand on the keys. My arms would get tired after long sessions because I couldn't put my hand down to rest without accidentally pressing a key. The build quality of the keyboard was super solid, but it wasn't designed with portability in mind. The metal plate on the top is solid, but it has a tiny edge so I could only lift the keyboard with my fingertips if I needed to move it. I do love the volume roller though. That is something I will never give up. Maybe they've changed this, but the old snap-in wrist rest from Corsair is utter garbage. The plastic fingers would snap off so easily. I think the newer versions use magnets.

Now I'm using a Steelseries Apex 7 TKL with brown switches. Heavy enough that it feels real solid, light enough to move without feeling bulky. The sides have a nice curve and bevel, so I can slide my hand to easily lift the thing if I need to get up and move around. Tenkeyless means my hands are closer together when I'm using both keyboard and mouse for gaming, which is better for my neck and shoulders. I have an external Magicforce numpad nearby if I need it. The wrist rest attaches using magnets and has a nice soft-rubber feel to it. Still got that volume roller thing. I swear, it's the best thing that ever happened to keyboards. What's useful for me is that I can take my setup and move it. The keyboard and wrist rest go into the original box, and the whole thing fits into my backpack along with all my other gaming accessories. A full-size keyboard is just too wide. Now that I'm working from home, the small footprint is great because I have room on my desk even with my work laptop open.

I have had buddies that got into the custom-build mechanical keyboard market. I will admit that the tactile feel and sound of their keys are phenomenal. No rattle or play in the keys, just solid tactile response. It's really impressive, but just not something that I have the time or budget to be dealing with when retail keyboards are good enough for me.

I've been using a Keychron for the past couple of years and it has worked quite well for me. It comes standard with Gateron switches in blue, brown or red with a hotswapable keyswitch option and can have either white or rgb backlight with shinethrough keycaps. They have multiple sizes 60%, 65%, etc. They range in cost from 80-100 depending on model and options.
