I've tried it. Especially competitive online games it adds a little bit of lag

Yeah, LAN is better WAN. And if you can, use as few devices as you can.

Cable only homie. No matter how much you spend on a router a 5$ cable always wins

Used to be true, not so much anymore when you can get wifi that is capable of exceeding a 10gb hardwire link speed wise.

Of course all things have to be considered, what machine is passing data to and through all has to be considered. You can be on your $5 wire and if the things your pc is connecting to are hot garbage or all limited to 1gb/s, my computer backing up through my $250 ap with dual 1gig L3/L4 LACP balanced uplinks across my switch and into my Storage server with 10gb/s fiber is gonna out do that $5 cable 99.999% of the time.

X399 Designare EX, Threadripper 1950x, Overkill Water 560mm dual pass radiator. Heatkiller IV Block Dual 960 EVO 500gb Raid 0 bootable, Quad Channel 64gb DDR4 @ 2933/15-16-16-31, RTX 3090 FTW3 Ultra, Corsair RM850x, Tower 900

As others have said, wired has better latency than wifi and is noticeable in competive esport titles. Other online games though, no big deal.
