Hi, I ordered a EVGA PSU 850 BQ, Will this work well with a Ryzen 9 5950x? I'm planning to put a evga RTX 3070 ti once it releases.

I'm trying to make sure everything works fine, sine the Ryzen 9 5950x is a pretty beasty cpu.

An 850W unit should probably be way more than good.

Use the EVGA Power Meter or the more detailed/preferred OuterVision Power Supply Calculator to estimate your system's wattage need and to see some recommended PSUs.

Oh cool... I overshot by about 300 watts........

    Better overkill than underkill Ig.

PSU won't work well or not well with CPU/GPUs. you just gotta make sure it has enough watts and is a reliable PSU.

yeah but, Im planning to OC a lot, so I'm wondering if it being a bronze and not gold/silver/platinum will affect my ability to do that

80+ is simply an efficiency standard, and does not measure really any other aspect of the power supply. As such, a power supplies 80+ rating (gold, silver, bronze, etc) is not important for overclocking. The main things that can effect overclocking stability are ripple and overall voltage regulation. In general, OC stability will not be effected by a PSU unless the ripple is very bad or voltages go out of spec, which would only happen with very low end power supplies and/or in certain circumstances (EX: crossload on a group regulated power supply, system exceeding max wattage of a PSU).
The BQ is not a high end unit, but the ripple/voltage regulation is good enough that should not be an issue.

TLDR: The EVGA BQ 850 is very unlikely to yield any different overclocking results than most other decent power supplies.

First time builder question: I used the EVGA Power Meter that you suggested and it said my build will use 576W and it suggest a 650W PSU.  Is a cushion of 74W enough?  I always thought you should have like a 50% buffer or so.

I would say not. At least with the newer 3000’s GPU’s. They sometimes, I don’t know if it’s just by case by case basis tend to have a huge peak. Going over your wattage would just force your PC to shut down. Better off with a 1000-1200w.

Use the OuterVision Power Supply Calculator and then mouseover "Load Wattage" and "Recommended PSU Wattage" in the Results to see what they mean.

Is a cushion of 74W enough? = For the data you entered, yes.

I always thought you should have like a 50% buffer or so = That's criminally overkill, but won't hurt anything except your wallet if that's what you wanna do.
