Title. Basically my hdd is not doing all too well. Installing games is pretty much a complete gamble at this point as to if it manages to complete or not, with a whole lot of other issues that aren't stopping anytime soon.
So I am deciding if I should just get the same hdd (which is a Seagate Barracuda 2tb 7200rpm) or a crucial 2 tb nvm.e ssd. Now I do have a samsung evo as my primary drive for windows and I am well aware of how much faster ssds are, but the problem is that the crucial ssd is more than 4 times more expensive than the barracuda. My current hdd has lasted me just 3 years, so I didn't really manage to get lucky with a super stable one, but how long do ssds last on average? I checked online and it says anywhere between 5 and 10 years, but how has it gone for you if you have/had one? Do you guys think 4 times the price increase is worth it in the long run?

GingerPopper, have you check it with Seagate's SeaTools to see if there is anything wrong with the only three-year-old drive?
How often do you run Windows Optimization plus another tool that is wonderful to use for this is CCleaner's Defraggler it will show how well the drive platters are being used.

    Edit: SeaTools (Windows)

I'm working on the assumption that you are looking for the best bang for your buck and have a max budget of $200, and that you are a typical user that only plays 1 or 2 AAA games at a time.  Most of your storage is probably videos, music, and games you keep around to play once in a while.  Given these assumptions, here is what I recommend:

Crucial P2 500GB M.2-2280 ~ $59 (make sure it is compatible with your motherboard or pick a different 500 GB SSD)
    Seagate Barracuda 2tb 7200rpm  ~ $55

If you load Windows and your favorite AAA game on the SSD, then put your videos, music, smaller games, etc, on the HDD then you will see the same performance as you would by spending $200 on a single drive.  The only time you would notice the HDD being slow is when you are initially copying content from your old drive (or copying to its replacement in the future).

    Best of luck

I prefer to use my nvme drive for windows AND my favorite games - so if you're lacking space for any of that, I recommend more SSD space. However, I am a huge proprieter for the idea that for general extra storage drive, and random games - the SSD is overkill and a 2tb drive is just fine. I am currently running 2 tb nvme, and a 6tb HDD.

I have ran both the tools and windows optimization already. Windows detected a bunch of corrupted areas and as for seagate it fails the short drive self test and has in fact worsened, now failing just 10% into it while it could have at least pushed for more before. It is 100% on its way to failing, which while unfortunate isn't all that bad since barracuda drives are very cheap anyway. I don't think any diagnostic tool or anything of similar nature can do enough for it at this point.

I have both SSD and hard drive.
SSD for OS and everything else HD.
Hard drives last longer than SSD, plus with a hard drive more storage space, mine is 10 terabytes.

Dont get another Seagate HDD. If anything, get a WD Black if you must have a HDD or get a decent SSD. Then throw that crap seagate in the garbage. In the long run normal sata ssd's arent that much slower than nvme's in real world, using it for all kinds of things tasks. I just use the mechanicals HDD's i have for backup storage now. I pull the drive from the closet, put it in the external and backup everything, then take it out and put it away. It DOES NOT stay hooked up to anything and stores in its esd bag. Ive had this routine for alot of years now, at least as long as ive been here and its saved my..... stuff a few times.
As for longevity, No Seagate on earth has that, but ive had a number of WD drives last a loooong time....in fact i just stopped using my WD Black sata 2 750gb HDD that i bought in 2008 maybe 3 months ago. The smart read said it had 46 bad sectors and it had a hiccup or two so i moved everything off it and on to a m2. My brother is using my WD Caviar black 250gb drive from 2005 for a linux o/s that runs plex. My Samsung 830 SSD still works just fine, but i retired it for the bigger 860. It was only 128gb and was a little slower than i wanted on this build. It may end up in the plex machine...who knows. That drive is 10 years old though! I believe it had 52tb written to it?!?! and 60,000 power on hours?!?! IT was alot i know that. The newer SSD's are very good and def will last as long as a HDD, i just gave you these personal examples to show you what they CAN do. Hope that helps.

Depends how much storage you need and how fast you need it, for gaming an SSD saves time on loading screens and boot but Costs more, most people just get a small sad for their OS and games and anything like movies or files just go on a hdd

You can find 1 TB SSDs for like $100 or less. You don't really even need a "fast" SSD to see an improvement. Even the slowest SSD is going to be faster than the fastest HDD.

I think I'll go with a HDD for now, going to try WD instead of seagate this time around and wait to see how ssd prices will look in a few years, but judging from how prices have been dropping over the years, I don't expect this to change.

Maybe Instead of swapping my HDD in the future, I'll just swap my 250gb 960 evo to a larger 1 tb SSD when it starts to cause me issues.

It’s probably closer to 3x the price for anything 2TB or under. Like you can find 2TB m.2 ssd for under 200 and 2TB hard drives normal goes for 65-70.

I'm never buying another hard drive again. For the computer I just built, I got a 500GB WD black m.2 and a 2TB WD blue m.2. A 2TB hard drive would have been muuuuch cheaper but I have no desire to ever wait for a hard drive to spin up again.

SATA SSDs are inexpensive these days, I would definitely recommend getting one with DRAM.

As far as I'm concerned, SSDs are cheap enough these days that if you don't have your games installed on one, you're wrong.

Even for people with a lot of games, at least juggle the ones you're currently playing onto an SSD to play. 1TB SATA SSDs are less than $100. I made the switch to SSD back in 2011 and never looked back.

As for reliability, I have a 512GB SSD in the gaming rig I've had since 2015 and it is going strong even though I don't treat it nicely. (I use it for video editing along with gaming)

Still no excuse for not having at least one SSD to boot from and run all programs from.  Spinny disks are for storage of things like pictures and videos where fast access isn't necessary.  But many games, even games as old as Elder Scrolls: Oblivion, benefit greatly from the speed of an SSD.

I'm not just talking about loading screens either.  In Oblivion, I got to the point where my athletics were so high that my character could run around the map faster than it could stream in.  This resulted in frequent momentary pauses while the game caught up.  When I installed the game on a RAID, the problem went away.  If I had an SSD to install the game on at the time, that would have fixed it also.

Even modern games benefit greatly from an SSD.  Star Citizen (albeit unoptimized) streams the world in all the time.  Playing it on a hard drive is very choppy, whereas simply moving to an SSD makes the game run significantly smoother.

I stick with Samsung SSD. They have a unique 3d technology, with increased reliability. The Samsung technology stack has been reliable. I have Samsung SSD going back to 830s in my computers and one has never failed after lots of use.
Other SSD manufacturers have been caught swapping out controllers, and re-configuring components to save money. And, the standard SSD technology uses a 2d grid to layout storage. So, if you want more storage you have to shrink distance between cells which results in less reliability. I'm not aware if any other vendors are moving to 3d SSD technology, but it seems a good idea.
At first, years ago, Samsung offered 5 and 10 year SSD warranties since their technology was not stacking 3d very high and failure rates were very low. Now they moved to 256 (I think) layers as the storage sizes have increased - and the reliability has dropped somewhat. If I was buying an SSD right now I'd research their 3d technology a bit more, and compare that with reliability of whichever other SSD manufacturers you consider.
    Good luck.

Update: Just wanted to add something I found recently. I have some top of the line eSATA 3.5 inch disk enclosures. I recently found an USB 3.0 to eSATA cable for about $40 and tried it on my old laptop USB 3.0 port. I was *shocked* to see large file transfers at 120 MB/s (byte/sec) sustained over USB 3.0 from a 3.5 inch Seagate spinning hard disk. Something to be said for plain old hard disks if you have the right setup.

Fwiw, I have a 6 year old Samsung m.2 512GB AHCI (predecessor to NVME) drive. I'm benchmarking my PC because I am building a new one and want to compare. According to Crystaldisk, I've written 40TB to it. I use the computer for gaming, editing, and as an HTPC. Drive is still going strong with about 2000MB/s read and 1400MB/s write.

My new drive is a WD SN850. Expected read is about 7000MB/s.
