Microsoft will announce the “next generation of Windows” very soon | KitGuru

During Microsoft Build 2021, Satya Nadella made a 15-minute presentation on sharing developer and cloud news, but closer to the end of the presentation, the CEO teased what’s coming next for Windows 10. Although a date wasn’t specified, he said that information about the “next generation of Windows” is coming soon.

It’s hard to say for sure what the “next generation of Windows” means, but the first two options that come to mind are a new big update for Windows 10 or a new Windows OS. The former has been rumoured for some time. The latter is harder to believe, considering Microsoft said that Windows 10 would be the last. Of course, this can’t be Windows 10X, as that has already been cancelled.

Regardless of what the “next generation of Windows” will be and when will we see it, it’s possible that Microsoft will show it alongside the revamped Microsoft Store.

I wonder exactly what was said here. It's a bit confusing.

Steve_B , so true, the 365 update affect windows 10 Stand alone OS as it uses Junctions to put apps in weird places just so their sometimes strange locations of data should be stored.   Having all the data exactly where they want keeps Windows from being Multiple USER from being true!! Data IMO data that needs sharing between multiple users should be configurable and private data should be where that user wants it to be located.  My opinion

I really hope they don't try to lock down Windows even more than they already have. I wouldn't call myself a power user, but just seeing some of the stuff Apple has done with macOS over the years is concerning, especially with permissions.

I'm excited. As a long-time Apple fan who switched to Windows because of gaming and Surface, I've been gladly observing how each update gets more user friendly while keeping the versatility and power of Windows. I know people get annoyed when Windows auto-updates (myself included). But let's face it, when was the last time you voluntarily updated your OS? I don't even want to update Edge or Chrome even when the process is seamless. Anyway, I'm looking forward to this! Hopefully we can get better ARM support for Microsoft's ARM processors. Seems we're moving that way.

Without much to go on, it is difficult to speculate what operating system upgrades Microsoft considers to be “next generation.” Beyond a basic graphical refresh, I am hoping that most of these upgrades are behind the scenes, such as enabling more power efficient or parallelized algorithms intended to take advantage of features in upcoming hardware (such as Intel’s upcoming hybrid core architecture and direct memory access).
What I really don’t want to see is a shift in business model “subscription based service”

I wonder if it will coincide with the changes to O365 being named M365 now. Maybe they're trying to centralize branding or something. I agree with the sentiment here hoping they don't lock things down further or make even more things subscription-based.

    Windows XP - Good
    Windows Vista - Bad

At the beginning MS stated, that Windows 10 is the last Windows. There shouldn't be Win 11 in the future. Who knows. Maybe they will not use name Windows anymore.

MS is changing product names pretty often (MS SMS -> SCCM -> Endpoint manager, ...)

I actually like the direction MSFT has headed in current years. Not sure why the huge change but they seem to be embracing more of the dev community these days with WSL and even things like VSCode

I'm a fan of windows 10. I'm worried they'll move to a subscription model for the OS though. I like buying it once, owning it, and receiving updates for a short period of time.

I highly doubt they want to segment their users. They finally got everybody on the same version after years of segmentation

They're never going to move to Windows 11 because it just doesn't sound as cool. They'll stick with Windows 10 until they just decide to drop the numbers and just call it "Windows".
