I am trading in my 2080 Super FTW3 Ultra for a 3080 FTW3 Ultra. Just received my step 3 to make a payment for the difference. This is what I paid - Original Price: 749.99 New Product Price: 889.99 Tax: 53.40 Shipping: 15.06 Total Upgrade Cost: 208.46 Why am I paying tax for the total amount of 889.99 ?? I am being taxed for an item that I am trading in. I ALREADY paid tax on that item when I purchased it from Microcenter, which was 45.30. I think I should only be paying tax for the difference between the 2 products, which in this case the amount was 6% of 140.00 which would be 8.40, NOT 53.40. I'm actually kind of pissed. Should I call EVGA? Would they actually do anything about it? Or is this fair and I'm being ridiculous?

If you were to sell your 2080 super and use that money to buy a 3080, you would pay taxes. You are not "trading in" for a 3080. They are buying back your 2080 Super and you are putting that money toward a 3080. This is how the law works and there's nothing EVGA can do.

The card you receive in Step Up will be considered a new purchase with a brand new warranty. You are paying taxes on the MSRP. Hope this helps.

Fair enough, just wondering what some other people thought.

I thought the warranty carried over from original purchase? So you are saying we will get an additional 3 years plus our extended warranty purchase?

Wow I had no idea about this step-up program. Sounds like an incredible deal. I wouldn't be upset about paying $200 and sending in an old card for a 3080. I dunno.

If it were an automobile you would only pay tax on the difference, but it's not. I am not a big fan of the extra tax either but when I joined the step up that portion of it was clearly spelled out. So fan or not, I did sign up for the step up.

Call EVGA and make sure this is the case. I went through step up and was only charged tax on the difference of the step up. Not sure if they changed the policy but I did not have to pay taxes on the full value of the step up card.

Did you buy the card from EVGA direct? He/OP got the card from a micro-center. I don't think EVGA can credit sales tax that they did not collect. They would eat that $$ I believe. Maybe OP can go back to micro-center and show he turned in the card to EVGA for a refund and get the tax back Or deduct it from OP's state taxes. Or just chalk it up and be glad he got the card at MSRP plus the extra tax. I am sure OP will be very happy either way with the card in hand.

You have to pay the tax on the value of the new item your purchasing. EVGA will have to pay the tax on the sale, they are just passing it on. Think of it as the card you trading in a part of your cash payment for the total price of the new card.

EVGA have to pay full sales tax so I guess you have to factor that into the step up price, as they will pass that on.
