Oh Windows, why do you keep turning computers on?  I've experienced everything from computers turning on within minutes of being put to sleep, as well as computers turning on from a complete off state.  Between Windows scheduler, Windows update, Windows optimization, and wake up from sleep settings, Microsoft definitely likes to keep us on our toes.  And all of this is from fresh installs too!

Yeah, just turn it off. It doesn't take long to start it back up. Saves electricity too :)

My computer even turns on from a full off state, even without the Ethernet cable plugged in. It's really annoying now.

Sounds like a bios setting needs to be adjusted. Windows has nothing to do with it.

Windows logs show the events so I can track them back. So far it's been all OS issues. Wake up on LAN has been disabled as well as keyboard and mouse not being able to wake up the computer.

For those that don't know, there is a Windows Automatic Maintenance setting that allows Windows to turn on to install updates and do it's standard OS checks. It's by default set to run at 3am and will turn your computer on to run.

I have experienced the same. I could never get desktop Win10 to properly sleep, unlike laptops where it works.

If you enable the EuP (or "ErP") power saving setting in your BIOS, this should no longer happen.

Yes, this is a combo of bios settings and windows power scheme settings that need to be addressed. Also this vid might shine some info on what shutdown and restart actually do, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y70eZg5-9XM

I can never get windows to sleep or stay asleep how I would like. Something always seems to do the opposite of what I want.

I don't experience that. Maybe a BIOS thing as others have mentioned.

That's been an ongoing issue that usually can be traced to a USB device, especially a game controller..Unplug USB devices and see if one matters..If a game controller matters, go to the Properties of it in Control Panel -> Devices and Printers -> PC Game Controller -> Properties -> Hardware -> USB Input Device -> Properties -> Change Settings -> Power Management and check Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power -> OK -> OK..Same thing with other devices.

Type cmd in the Windows Search Box..Then right-click on Command Prompt and Run as administrator..Then copy/paste or type powercfg -restoredefaultschemes in Command Prompt and press Enter..Exit Command Prompt.

    Make sure Windows is updated.

Then into Control Panel -> Power Options and change the Sleep/Hybrid Sleep/Hibernate settings however you want.

That's a few things to try, but if you search you'll find other known fixes.

My joystick wouldn't let Windows Sleep or Hibernate until I ran the powercfg -restoredefaultschemes command, and then I made custom changes from there.

    Thanks bob16314!

I had the same issue with the computer not falling asleep on its own and then waking itself back up after I made it go to sleep. I got rid of the self-waking problem using the steps you mentioned, but the not falling asleep on it's own still remains a mystery.

I think some of it is residual effect from old days when hibernation resume state wasn’t a good implementation. You’d probably only save like 15 watts by shutting down vs sleep which probably amounts to 15 dollars a year kind thing. Nobody turns off their cell phone right? ;)

Yeah I've had similar problem. There is a powershell command to find out what device booted up the computer most recently. For me it always ended up being my network card for some reason. So the solution for me was to go to the Power Management settings of my network adapter and then turn off "Allow this device to wake the computer"

The ethernet cable is not the issue, your network bus is setting it off weather the cable is plugged in or not. It thinks that there is a connection waking the computer. You can probably disable network boot in your bios setting but you might need to update your bios if there is not way to disable it.
