So since I'm new to the whole gaming peripherals, I've been doing some research. I see so many different colors and types of switches. Can anyone recommend one color vs the other, or reading material I can use to figure out what would work best for me? Thanks!

Here is a good link that will get you started on choosing. Cherry MX is kind of the mainstream popular brand, but there are many others.

You can find on Amazon switch test packs. It’s pretty affordable and has like five or seven switches and key caps so you can hear how they would sound and the force needed to activate. This is the best way to get a personal feel for what you want and pretty much ever keyboard is compared to the Cherry switches. So expect that even if you go with another brand you will see that it’s like the Cherry red or Cherry Blue or Cherry Brown and the like.

A friend of mine recommended me Cherry MX switches - the red ones I believe. I tried them today on his keyboard and they dont really require too much force to be pressed if thats what u're looking for.

I've been leaning toward the red or brown. But I have yet to go to a store to try them out myself. What do you think of the linear Z15?

In general, it wouldn't hurt to try them all. It's what I ended up doing. Hard to tell no matter how much you read on them

brown switches are nice if you have roommates or live with your family because they are quiet

It's one of those things you have to test. Linears are usually best for gaming, tactiles for productivity, and clickies for peasants with bad taste. Each type is going to have different actuation force, you'll have to try them.

There are far quieter switches than browns. Most linears are going to be quieter, and then "silent" variations of those linears will be even more so.

desmodue999 cherry mx!
This is not helpful. Cherry has it's own colors like all other brands. Further, there are a lot of boutique switch companies that are going to make better switches than Cherry.

It is all about your game preferences and main use. For me, FPS, MMORPG and office use, I'm ok with the linear ones or the RED switches

As the first mechanical keyboard MX browns or red would be fine. But regarding good(mid-high end) keyboards those are considered bad. But sadly you can't get a keyboard with high-end switches at any electronics store. You need to build it yourself or do a commission from a keyboard builder. Which can end up costing from couple hundred to double thousands USD.

If you don't care about noise blues are nice. They have a bump on actuation point. Red are linear - they don't have a tactile bump, they go straight down. Slightly similar to membrane keyboards but completely better in every way. Brown aka tactiles are in-between. Tactile bump without the metallic click of Blues. You can buy a switch tester from China or somewhere locally to feel them. I recommend Reds for gaming and typing if you like light switches.
