still running my 1080ti here. It really still is viable for most games but really looking forward to the 3080ti. Feels like I need an upgrade

If you are worrying about the card failing there are steps you can take to extend the lifespan.
From a software perspective, purposely underclocking the chip can help (at the expense of some performance).
From a hardware side, you should perform cleaning maintenance at minimum and in more extreme cases replace the thermals.
That last step might be a last resort (since it probably voids the warranty) but after 3-5 years the warranty is expired, and it is probably the best move.

Easy maintenance include just taking the card out from time to time and blasting out the heatsink fins with some compressed air to get all the dust out of the card. You can recover a lot of performance if there is lots of dust caked up inside the fins since the GPU clocks will start to drop after you hit 60 °C on the core.
 
Replacing the thermal pads and replacing the thermal paste on the card would require you to remove the heat sink / fan assembly from the board. I've normally not had to replace thermal pads unless they get damaged when removing the heat sink assembly but I do like the replace the thermal paste on the card after 2 or 3 years of service since the paste can dry out over time. Doing this shouldn't void your warranty in the United States ever since it was decided that simply breaking the sticker seal on the card alone is not enough to void the warranty, but if you break something while you are doing this it most certainly will void your warranty.

I don't think there is exactly a time frame on that. Unless RTX becomes mainstream. I usually upgrade GPUs when the frames I get are no longer satisfactory. This is quite subjective. A 1080Ti will be a very potent card for me, but for some it might be unusable. Depends, how do you feel about it right now?

I'm in the same boat.. got my card in 2017 and still going strong.. I put on a x43 and g12 and hums along at 27c idle. I usually upgrade every 4 yrs or so.. its due for an upgrade this year but let's see if I land a 3080. Looking forward to battlefield 2042.

Been using a GTX1080Ti for 3 years, but playing on 1080p. Given i have a Ryzen 1800X CPU, if I want to move to 1440p with this card, should I at least have to upgrade the CPU to be over 60FPS comfortably?
 
Since I don't expect the market to get better any time soon.

 
 
Even at 1080p your 1080ti is not able to deliver 60 FPS comfortably on AAA games with maxed out settings (Cyberpunk, GTA V, RDR2...), so if you move to 1440p it will be even worse. Imo no point of moving to an increased resolution if you will have to lower the settings even more.
 
Keep your current setup right now and upgrade with hopefully an available RTX 4080 at a reasonnable price next year 

As long as ray tracing doesn't matter for you, she's got plenty of life. There are lot of plenty gaming on less.

I'm running an ancient 1080 Ti on a ultra-wide 1440p monitor. I'm really curious how much longer I can hold out before gaming at decent fps and above-average quality get's difficult to maintain. I would like to upgrade to the 3080 Ti but I refuse to pay the scalpers so I might be gaming on this old 1080 for a while longer. Just curious if anyone else is in the same boat?

AMD FSR is releasing soon and should be open source. If so, your GTX 1080ti will benefit from it with increased framerates. You can use that as an alternative while you wait for GPU supplies to increase. 

Bolded part, that's if Nvidia starts optimizing for FSR, from what i understood. Also at the moment we don't know the exact image quality that FSR will get. Personally wouldn't use it if it's equivalent to DLSS 1.0.
 
As for OP, same boat but to be honest it's not that bad. Have a big backlog of games that the 1080Ti still performs excellent.

Still a decent card. But if you have anyway to upgrade at msrp then I would highly advise to do so. Prices for that 1080ti should be going downhill, should sell it while it is still worth more than it should.

Hold out for another six months. By then the 3080's should be much more reasonable.

Still running both my 1080s as well, all the games i play flawlessly at max settings on Samsung odyssey q7 monitor, With no overclocking what so ever. Definitely stout cards for sure!
