Nvidia GeForce RTX 30 series graphics cards with cryptomining limiter reportedly coming next month

That’s nvidia’s solution to fix the gpu shortage; a slap on the wrist to miners.

    It states towards the bottom:

Like the RTX 3060, the rest of the GeForce RTX 30 GPU family is expected to receive a similar treatment, as Nvidia reportedly plans to update the whole lineup with new graphics processors featuring anti-mining capabilities -- the kind that can't be bypassed.

We will see how that goes

Since it only applies to Ethereum miners would just do a different coin, but anything helps, hopefully its a actual hardware solution that cannot be bypassed.

only applies to one type of etherium
there are many coins that use the same algorithm

and ETH is changing it's alg to combat Nvidia

I agree, too little too late.
AMD had the right idea with the low memory bandwidth and Infinity Cache... Nvidia instead went to GDDR6X with insane power consumption. And now caused themselves drama by trying the mining limiter, failing to prevent sales to miners, and even failing to keep the mining limiter v1 working. But they don't care, look at the money they're making.

We don't know whether it is still just eth in these new GPUs.
And it was hw in 3060, nv just leaked a wrong driver. No one hacked it yet except just using this driver.

    changing what exactly?

afaik it's the opposite, ETH is planning to use proof-of-stake in the future instead of mining.
Also some changes in July that may hurt miners.

Even though I think the crypto mining limiter will be easily bypassed again, it is good to see that Nvidia is trying to do something to fix the GPU shortage.

Re: Nvidia to limit crypto mining on new GPUs 2021/05/02 13:21:27 (permalink)
again with people not reading news stories

    ETH has forked

We have ETH 1.0 moving to ETG and ETH2.0

if you Hear any news is that the people working on changing it slightly so that Nvidia detection algorithm misses ETH - like it does with other ETH based coins
there is more than 1 type of coin out there you know

as you know it only works on ETH and NOT ANY OTHER COIN

which in itself is a FTC/SEC violation because as a company you cannot pick winners and losers making it unfair to compete against other coins
    Crypto currencies are legitimate business

they are interfering in a legitimate business model - on an open SDK saying all research and math can be done with our cards with NVIDIA NOT GETTING IN YOUR WAY OF USING the SDK any way you want
then change the game when Someone makes a piece of software thet is so good that one type of market buys up all the cards
thats not the fault of that business.... it's the fault of Nvidia for not having supply - it the fault of Nvidia for not PLANNING on extra production or 2nd having a card specific for this market that is better(preferably enter the ASIC market)

case in point lets say i create a piece of software that improve robots that all the robot manufacturers buy up all the supply of gpus - leaving none for games - along come Nvidia and says nope were gonna gimp your product making all those robots and future robots useless
even tho i as a company played fair and used the product exactly as you asked - using your open SDK to create something even more useful to society= - just because you don't like what I did..... and you did 't come up with it yourself or it hurts your sales to gamers - changing your business model you relied on(even tho you are making more$$$)
... you rake me over the coals and kill my business - that is illegal

id rather them go after industries that are illegal  and make software used in those industries not work first - but NO they do nothing to combat that

Ethereum GeneSys Foundation Has Completed A 'Hard Fork' Of Ethereum to Reclaim Staked ETH 2.0 Coins, And Incentivize The PoW Mining Community On The Blockchain Network

    https://www.prnewswire.co...network-301272383.html

ETH will be BOTH POW and POS

This hard fork initiated by the Ethereum GeneSys Foundation, known as the 'Maple Fork', has been undertaken to save the Proof-of-Work community, and to produce a forked coin called Ethereum GeneSys (ETG). The foundation also plans to make future changes to the Blockchain consensus, including those related to significant reduction of gas fees, Proof-of-Work security, as well as performance improvements.

Earl concluded "It is not only important to have node diversity based on codebase, but geographically diverse hosting as well. The long term goal is to have Hybrid approach, with both PoW and POS in their respective mainline branches, for all to participate".

The only way Nvidia is truly going to cripple crypto is to laser cut their CUDA and compute cores on the chips. If they do that, they're going to have to rebrand them to keep from confusing consumers as to what capabilities their cards have (GTX vs RTX vs whatever the neutered card is)

Where there is a will there is a way. Miners will just move on to something else.

Lets prevent them from using OUR cards !! Cause surely

NVIDIA should have done this a long time ago. Imo this is a poor way to restrict their GPU's as well. Surely there is a better way.

I predict nvidia might be forced to split their products bringing in the FCC to force them to make products that are aimed for miners, and products aimed for gamers/developers. Get enough petitions/signatures going and people could make an impact.

Nah Nvidia just wants to cash in on both worlds. Theyre selling their mining cards like hotcakes. And theyre based on old tech so its cheap af to produce.

Pretty sure it won't be efficient a long time, Nvidia doesn't have a real interest about let AMD sell his graphic cards to the miners. It's just marketing ****...

This is honestly just a sad effort to make a cash grab shrouded in PR to make it look like they care what people do with the cards other than buy them and then just replace them when the next card arrives. I really like what eVGA is doing and wish more manufacturers would follow suit. Create a queue and stop the BS with bots and scalpers. If people want to mine, let them, just make them wait in the same line as everyone else and have the same limits.
