AMD's ramping its GPU production to combat the world's GPU shortage | OC3D News (overclock3d.net)

AMD's Radeon RX 6000 series has brought AMD back into high-end competition with Nvidia, offering a significant performance uplift over the company's older graphics cards thanks to the power of their RDNA 2 graphics architecture. AMD's only problem right now is that they cannot produce enough of their graphics products to satisfy the market's demand. During the company's Q1 2021 earnings call, AMD confirmed that they had "more than doubled" their RDNA 2 GPU sales over Q4 2020, and CEO Lisa Su has further confirmed that they expect their GPU sales to "grow significantly" as the company ramps RDNA 2 production.

AMD's GPU production is limited, as TSMC, AMD's main supplier, is currently operating at close to 100% capacity, making it difficult for AMD to order more silicon. Even so, AMD has managed to secure more of TSMC's limited fab space, which will help the company to release more products onto the market in the coming quarters. Graphics card pricing has gone through the roof in today's market, with components shortages, rising material costs, and high demand increasing the retail pricing of all GPUs much higher than their MSRPs. This has made it difficult for consumers to buy or build new gaming PCs, especially if they don't want to pay inflated GPU prices.

It will be interesting to see (in my opinion) if AMD can ramp up production enough to combat the shortage or at least make it less painful.

Sounds like PR, if the Fabs are at 100% and everyone else also needs more, how are they actually gonna end up with more? For real.

Because Apple is constantly shifting more and more towards TSMC's most advanced nodes and processes, and AMD is saying that they are committed to ensuring that they get the space vacated by Apple (and maybe others??).

I'm convinced that even with the largest electronic manufacturers that some of their capacity is geared towards counterfeit runs that fall off the back of trucks in Asia market. They just legitimize that capacity and get paid more for it.

I'm not convinced that production numbers are what is limiting the market. They need to focus on a way for them to be distributed better. More consistent deliveries, deliveries to physical stores, and combat the BOTs, scalpers, and miners.

    Dr. Lisa Su—AMD Q1 2021 Earning Call

And we're well-positioned for further growth as we have tripled our commercial notebook design wins with the largest OEMs this year. In graphics, revenue increased by a strong double-digit percentage year over year and sequentially, led by channel sales growth as revenue from our high-end Radeon 6000 GPUs more than doubled from the prior quarter. We introduced our Radeon 6700 XT desktop GPU with leadership 1440p gaming performance in March and are on track for the first notebooks featuring our leading-edge mobile RDNA 2 architecture to launch later this quarter. We expect Radeon 6000 Series GPU sales to grow significantly over the coming quarters as we ramp production.

Guess this means they put in more orders for 7nm GPU wafers. Impacts from this might materialize with a few months...

I have been hearing amazing and positive reviews with amd’s new gpu and cpu lineups, I’m actually highly considering going full AMD. Still going to stick with evga power supplies though, they’re good quality.

Any increase in supply will be good news but how are they planning to actually get it into gamers hands rather than scalpers and miners? That's tge fundamental issue....

Lol that is very unlikely. I don't think the US government will let them do it easily

Will this filter down to consumer graphics cards/DIY PC builders though?

Seems like more and more devices (cars) are needing graphics processing - Those companies are likely to get the chips before we do!

If I read what Doctor Su said in the quarterly announcement correctly production will ramp over the next few 'quarters'. That could be a steady increase taking 9 months or more.
