I was having an issue where any game that was graphically intense would crash or cause my screen to go all black and I'd have to end the task or restart my computer. Games affected include: apex legends, black desert online, outriders, destiny 2.

To fix this issue I just had to reapply thermal paste. Crazy to think the issue the whole time was thermal paste. I spent hundreds of hours trying to find a fix.

I hope these helps extend the life of your current card as we gladiator style combat try to get the next gen.

That happens sometimes when your thermal paste gets old. I had the same issue on my ROG Strix.

Could be other factors as well. A unstable overclock.

But if you weren't monitoring temps it's hard to tell. If redoing the paste helped than i bet it was overheating when pushed in those games.

Correct, it was blacking out around 67 degrees C which is not a high temp. I already fixed the problem and was just sharing what worked for me when it wasn't an unstable overclocking or an issue with drivers, or power supply or any of the common issues you would troubleshoot first

I bought the artic thermal paste cleaning kit off of Amazon for less then $10. Included everything I needed to clean the old dried up paste and get a fresh coat on

Good to know that fixed it for you. I would never have guessed new pasted would be the solution considering your temps were still decent before swapping paste.

Screen freezing at low GPU temp can also be indicative of a thermal issue with the on board memory.  Typically the temperature reported is the temperature of the GPU chip itself (meaning the memory can independently overheat with no reported thermal spike). In such cases, replacing the thermal pads on the memory is the a possible solution.

A thermal paste change is always recommended after a few years of use in my experience. I tend to change mine every two years. Doesn't sound like bad OC as usually my game crashes but not my computer when my GPU OC is unstable. But doesn't sound like a temp related issue either. How long have you had time to test it? It's possibly subsided for a moment. Perhaps you had a bad connection on the power plug?

Could also be a bad mount.

Thanks for sharing.  Depending upon the age of the card and how hard it has been pushed over the years, I guess it's not unreasonable to have to repaste.  Not anything I'd want to do with a card that has warranty coverage, but after that certainly an option.
