Microsoft's new Agility SDK solves DirectX 12's biggest weakness | OC3D News (overclock3d.net) Microsoft's DirectX 12 feature rollout has been a disaster, as many critical DirectX 12 features have been tied to specific versions of Windows 10, requiring PC gamers to update their OS' to enjoy the latest DirectX features from Microsoft. This system has prevented game developers from fully embracing the full DirectX 12 feature set, as it takes time for Windows updates to roll out to all gaming systems. Now, Microsoft's planning to sever the link between DirectX 12 and Windows 10 updates, allowing game developers to finally utilise the latest DirectX 12 features without fear of OS incompatibility amongst their PC playerbase. This effort to open up DirectX 12's feature set resulted in the creation of the DirectX 12 Agility SDK, which allows game developers to make use of the latest DirectX 12 features with compatibility with Windows 10's November 2019 update or newer versions of Windows 10. With Microsoft's Agility SDK, Shader Model 6.6, and the full DirectX 12 Ultimate feature set can be used by older versions of Windows 10. The DirectX 12 Agility SDK will allow game developers t utilise the latest features of DirectX 12 without fearing PC incompatibility on systems with older versions of Windows 10. This effort will help both PC and Xbox Series X/S developers, as it has created feature parity between both platforms, simplifying cross-platform game development. With Microsoft's DirectX 12 Agility SDK, developers will be able to utilise the latest features of DirectX 12 earlier, which will assist with the rollout of Microsoft's DirectX 12 Ultimate features and the adoption of Shader Model 6.6. This move will also prevent PC gamers from being forced to update their OS to play the newest games, making this move a positive one for developers and gamers alike. As far as I am concerned this has taken far too long for a release, but at least it is finally available.

Hard to make sense of Microsoft's intent. One of the main reasons why they pushed everyone into Windows 10 was forcing DX12 to be an exclusive. Now that Win 7 is depreciated and soon Win 8.1, they're only now abstracting DX12 from Win 10. Way too shady IMHO.

Microsoft could have saved themselves a lot of time and money if they would have done this in the first place.

I wonder if there are any games planning to take advantage of this yet?

Microsoft can be pretty complicated for some reason, unsure why.

Yes, it's been a while and I can't believe how many years passed, but DirectX12 and the way they handle updates to versions of Windows 10 it's very weird. Tying DirectX 12 to specifically Versions of Windows is baffling. I remember when DX12 was such a thing, and the new improvement in games, but years after its release very few games use them (properly), and most likely the DX11 versions of those games are more stable and have higher performance. Don't know what went wrong with the introduction of DX11, but I don't think any game is better after switching to DX12. If you know games that perform marginally better on DX12, I am willing to hear from you.

I'm a bit confused, so what this means that there will be a update to DirectX as a DirectX update rather than integrating itself as a Windows 10 update?

No. It means developers can now add the newest DirectX 12 features to their games, and gamers can play games with these features without having to upgrade their OS. As long as you have windows 10 November 2019 update or newer you’re good.
