Would like to hear from EVGA as to why there are so many reports of GA variant power supplies shutting down with RTX 3080 and 3090 gpu.

I contacted EVGA support after my power supply shut down with the Asus ROG STRIX 3090. They immediately acknowledged the problem and are sending a 1000w G+ psu as a replacement.

The 850GA is the cheapest 850w EVGA psu that is shown on PC Part Picker if you sort by minimum of QTY(3) - 8(6+2) pin VGA cables.

There are so many "Rate my builds" on reddit with potential customers selecting this combination of psu and gpu.

Is this wide spread or just wait and see how many call tech support for warranty? Why is EVGA replacing with 1000w psu instead of a different suffix 850w? Cost or availability? Or because the 3090 really needs more than 850w? I haven't seen other brand 850w psu being reported with this issue. I'm guessing it's the GA variant only.

EVGA usually goes above and beyond with their replacements so unless you've got a problem with a 1000W instead of an 850W (I don't see why you would), I would just see it as a free upgrade as a sort of apology. I RMAed my 1070 SC and got a 1070 Ti FTW2 back so this isn't that rare for EVGA.

I'm having this problem, too. But when I sent my GA for RMA, I was sent another GA that didn't solve the problem.

Was this before or after the recall? I doubt they would send another recalled product to you since that's really counterproductive.

Has it been officially recalled? The one they sent me did have a slightly different product number.

My bad, I thought that based on the title there had been an official recall already.

It's both cost & availability, they haven't had PSUs in stock on the site consistently in about 6 months.  The 3090 does not need more than 850W, if it's a solid unit, AKA something that's Platinum rated or better & not from some weird or cheap brand.

I really don't get why anyone would spend $1500+ on a GPU then buy a $100 PSU and think "This is fine, spending 1/15th the price of my GPU on the heart of my system that powers everything in it" - don't skimp on your PSU is something every new system builder should learn & people that have been building for ages really need to practice.  Skimping on something that is literally the most important part of the system, and one that, for the most part, people replace quite less often than their system, just makes no sense.  Buying a quality 1000-1200W PSU will last you the full 10+ years of warranty most likely - it's a one time $200-$400 expenditure for 10 years of peace of mind that your computer builds will not have power issues.

Anyone looking to upgrade their PSU (if eVGA has theirs in stock), keep in mind that an Associates Code will get you 10% off the price during checkout on eVGA.com - which for a unit like this: https://www.evga.com/products/product.aspx?pn=220-P2-0850-X1 is a $24 discount.

I believe as far as the 3080/3090 shutting down systems issue goes, you're correct & it's mainly the GA line of PSUs that is at fault... It's most likely load spikes that are triggering shut down protections, and since that PSU is an older design, it's probably not something they can "fix", hence why they're sending out beefier units as replacements, for the most part.

I just RMAd mine. They told me that it was an issue with the psu, and there is a revised model. The bad model number is 220-GA-0850, which the revised one is 220-GA-0850-X1. I get it in a few days so hopefully it works Ok.

I RMAd my 850 GA in anticipation of having a problem with the RTX 3080 that I planned on getting. Thankfully it was smooth sailing with EVGA's customer service.  I should have spent time researching PSUs from the beginning.

I was also having issues with my 3080. Heavily undervolting seemed to be a bandaid fix for it

Hi, i also have this Problem with my supernova 850 Ga and a 2080ti and 6900xt

The Hole PC is shutting down and its Not possible to Power on until i Switched the on and Off Button on the PSU.

First i thought my Graphic Card is maybe broken but i Switched to a 6900xt and the Same Problem happened.

I found Out it happens if i increase the Graphic Card Power Target to 15% and than Run a Game or Benchmark .

Maybe the PSU shut down because the cards are Drawing to much Power ?

With my old PSU i never had a Problem increasing the Power Target .

Frankly, it just sounds like the PSU has failed or is failing.  We still need other information about what kind of CPU/MB you're using, and checking the BIOS for the +12V reading is always helpful.  I'll have one of our CS reps reach out to you to further assist.

This issue isn't only on teh GA line either.... My 850w Supernova G3 GOLD is experiencing the same problems and cannot power the computer properly with a 6900xt, constant crashes/shutdowns/BSOD, confirmed by the retailer it was purchased from that this line of PSU also experiences the issue. EVGA (EU) have yet to answer my RMA/email and were not particualry helpful on first contact either. Seems their products are not as good as I initially expected, or their customer service from what I have read. Had I known this beforehand I would have steered well away from them!!

Keep me posted on what happens next dude. I am sending mine back to the retailer for them to test/RMA (as EVGA customer service is disgustingly poor), looks like when I get a replacement i'll be having the same issue again and getting a refund!!! (my system is currently running perfect on a 750w NZXT supply, at full power, so EVGA definately has poor products)

I think the Power peaks from the Graphic Card shutting the Power supply down .

Surely you can send it back as it is not fit for purpose? It cannot do the job it is rated to do, by both the manufacturers (AMD and EVGA), and provide the 850w power needed for the GPU. The product is defective, regardless of age, it is not fit for purpose. I don't have a lot of hope for the new one of mine when it arrives eventually.

Maybe i got my rma PSU to Work now . I didnt have shutdown for 2 days now .

I Changed the PCI Express cables to my Graphic Card and i Switched the Plug ins on the PSU .

Before i used the PCI-E Out 1 and 2 on the PSU .

    Now i Switched to PCI-E Out 1 and 4 .

Maybe this Switch on the PSU was the Change and the Power Spikes can be handled now

Yeah i received my RMA PSU from the retailer last week and its still happening for me too. EVGA just make bad product by the looks of it... and their customer service is TERRIBLE too. Telling me I HAVE TO PAY to get their faulty, unfit for ppurtpose product back to them. LOL, what a joke. That's the last EVGA product i ever purchase for any of the builds I do from now on

Unfortunately the QA probably has been lacking the past half year as the increase in demand has cause many manufacturers to ramp up production, so naturally this will cause a higher amount of defects.

I really do hope those recalled one are not being refurbished, and sell as B-stock. PSU is not something I would like to buy used...
