I have my 980TI in a system buy from a few years ago no problem then all of a sudden the display goes  and then there is a burning smell from the Pc i automatically assumed it was the PSU so replaced the PSU still no display . I sub sequently find  my old graphics card a R9 280X and put it in the system got a display so the PCI-e Rail is working , ordered a display port cable to see wether i could use the display port adapter no joy on that .
Subsequently i noticed that even that i dont get a display the TV is getting something from the card because ut highlights the connecter . The card is getting power however on boot up fans try to start and rotate abour 90 degrees and stop .
Basically Any ideas ?

I have looked for a replacement card but all out of stock unless i go to scalpera , would it be possible to repair the card if so what would the cost me

Many thanks and sorry for the length

I am sorry to read about your case. In my - basic - understanding the 980 TI is damaged. I would send the card to EVGA (if it is an EVGA card) and let them have a closer look.
Keep my fingers crossed for you

Please please send it back the manufacturer wether it's evga or not, just send it back the manufacturer. If you still have your warranty, that's good, they'll fix it, or replace it.

Like you said if it made a burning smell that's really not a good sign. It's likely something on the PCB of the card blew up or burnt out. I really wouldn't use it again even if you baked it unless you're just testing it in a throwaway PC. It could potentially kill the rest of your system if it's non-functional. What kind of power supply do you have? Also, 980 Tis can be found on eBay sometimes for a decent price, but still more than what they were a year ago by far.

In general any soft of burning smell indicates a failed component.
Given the general GPU board architecture, that component is likely (in older of probability): the gpu chip (most likely), a vram module, a capacitor (voltage regulator), a fan motor (very unlikely).
Those are the components that wear out the fastest, as they experience the most extreme thermal conditions.
Unless you can visually identify and replace the failed component... as others have indicated... applying power to this device risks damage to your entire system.

I am sorry for your loss.

I didn't comment earlier because I figured this failure is so common that they must have realized it by now.

The most likely component that failed is one of the VRM MOSFETs.  Those MOSFETs burn out on these cards all of the time.  It's nearly 100% chance that is what failed.

Umm Smelling the burning from the computer is really not a good sign. I would think that something fried and going by the age of It I would assume that you are out of warranty. Good luck on your quest for scalpera!
