Sorry if there is a better place to put this. It’s very odd

Has anyone noticed the 30 series founders edition adapter sold by EVGA is sold as 16awg but is really 18awg?

I spoke to sales about it, it looks like they have since removed the 16awg rating from their website. But unfortunate for them the package still states 16awg, measuring the wire (and just using good old fashioned eye balls) it is obviously 18awg. What is that about?
Sales got super defensive and pissed like I was beeing a jerk but I was just asking why they were misrepresenting the product and wasting my time. I waited weeks for this cable, I made sure to double check it was 16awg because I got burned on an Amazon cable pulling the same stunt saying it was 16, but came and was 18awg. Sales Just yelled at me that should just get a refund, that it, the cable, would work fine. And refused to comment on the fact it was 18awg... I expected better from these guys. Unreal. First and last evga product I buy:/

Nvidia clearly states 16awg is required. I am returning the cheap cable from EVGA, is feel like junk, and is way too thin. Unbelievable they would make such a mistake, or try to openly lie?
So confused.

The photo is the clearly marked 16awg on the package, and Evga thin black 18awg wires next to real 16awg white wires.

Sales got real mad when I said it was on the package and kept yelling at me it was not on the site? Real lame, not happy.

It did look mighty thin when I received mine, but I actually never installed it. I also have a cablemods version that I haven't installed. Mainly because everything has been working fine with the nvidia adapter and I'm honestly scared that something will go wrong using EVGA's or Cablemod's cables. So I have two 12 pin adapters that I'm terrified to use because of the random 30 series power issues.

Hello, I can confirm that the PerFE cable is 16AWG.

Yeah don’t know about that. I have done construction and electrical work a long time. 16 is a thickness, a size of wire. I will take a picture of evga’s next to a clearly marked 18awg wire, they’re exactly the same size. You cannot have 18 and 16 the same size. The white wires in the photo are 16awg, the diameter is significantly different.

isn't the insulation sometimes a lot thicker? Like Cablemods says they use 18awg but they have a thicker insulation so it looks more robust. I thought you have to measure the actual copper wire core to get the guage?

Agreed.
Now I am not saying that the OP ("original post", or the "original poster" person who made the original post) is wrong or misleading us, but the pictures shown in the OP is of the wires with the insulation.  The thickness of the insulation is unknown.  And the optical illusion of white versus black is also problematic.  From here, looking at my screen, I cannot determine who is correct and who is mistaken.
If we had some scale to compare against, it could be obvious that the EVGA cable is not possibly 16 AWG because even including the insulation it is still smaller than 16 AWG.  But alas, we have no scale.  The jury is out on this one.

Hard to say, I could be wrong. At any rate I have ruined this adapter to try and find out 😂

Pretty close but I suppose after tearing it down, and tearing down one 18awg I had on hand. It is possible evgas is 16 with very minimal insulation. 50$ experiment.

I do wish these were not so cheaply insulated, they look dramatically different than cablemod or any other aftermarket cable extension used for cable management and aesthetic case design. They’re thin enough that I will probably keep using the gnarly nvidia adapter till a decent one is produced.

At 12 volts, the insulation doesn't need to be thick.  You could have the bare uninsulated wires spaced apart by the thickness of a human hair, and the voltage would not jump the gap through normal air.
I think that the thick insulation used for some products is used just to provide a "premium feel" at a small price increase.
I wouldn't say that the insulation EVGA used is bad or "cheap", it's maybe just not unnecessarily expensive.

Thank you for taking one for the team at least. I'm still with you on leaving the nvidia adapter as is but mainly because I'm nervous to make any changes to the cards power delivery since everything has been working fine *knocks on wood* for now.

While this is true, by cheap I mean lacking insulation and so clearly different from everything on the market.

These “look cheap” and are so thin they’re jarringly different than the other, very visible, cables in my case. This visual difference is enough for me to not want them because it makes the symmetry and look way off.
They def spared the expense of maintaining the industry standard aesthetic as far as insulation on 90% of aftermarket cables, which is cheap in its own way.

I’m sure someone will enjoy them. Not me
