This is not about whether or not mechanical keyboards are better, but more a discussion of what you like about them or don't like about them.  Or maybe why you'll use them or never use them.

For me personally, I am now using nothing but mechanical keyboards.   Cherry reds on my aging (but durable) Corsair K95.  Knockoff blues on my new Ajazz KB and Romer G's on my Logitech G613.   I like using all three.  I like how the keys feel and the action of the keys.

Do they make me a better typer?  Nope.   In fact I could hook up my old Logitech G510 and type away just as well.

If I had to pin down one reason why I know have all mech keyboards?  I like the clatter.

I like the feel & the durability.
Mine don't really make hardly any noise. I used one that was real noisy once, and it didn't bother me  - but the wife couldn't watch TV ( the clacking drove her crazy )

I like the responsiveness of the keys...the RGB...my original TTe Sports Poseidon was noisier than the EVGA Z15...but the responsiveness is superior on both.

I have a k95 platinum....love the thing...don't think it makes me type any better than my old membrane, but I like the feel better.

Can anyone recommend a nice wired mechanical, quality name brand but not excessive?  Black, num pad, non-RGB or can be disabled.  Matching mouse?

It might be worth looking at the EVGA featured bundle of the Z15 and the X17. Those work together with the same software and for a name brand made for gaming it’s becoming harder to find the number pad as a lot of gamers like ten keyless models for the smaller size. Personally I use a ten key often enough that I wouldn’t want to lose it.

As for the discussion above part of the reason the wife wouldn’t like the sound and you wouldn’t mind is because you expect the sound on the keystroke and it’s expected. One thing you could have tried is to use a desk pad mouse pad. The kind that goes under the keyboard as well as gives the mouse room will work as a sound buffer. It’s not like the keyboards I ever have found to be loud damping it might help if it’s bugging others in the home.

    Hey thanks, leaning towards a Logitech K845 brown ($60) and G502 ($40).

I stepped over to Corsair keyboards quite some time ago as I like the response. Currently using the K100.
