Will the Z590 chipset have a net benefit for 10th gen Intel?

The time is coming soon when I may be upgrading to a comet lake processor and I'm trying to decide whether to purchase the EVGA Dark from the upcoming Z590 chipset or the Z490. Should I wait for the Z590? It seems like a lot of the heavy hitting features, like PCIE 4.0, are locked to Rocket Lake.

Appreciate any help guys!

If you can get a Z590, might as well. Your right that it probably will have more features for Rocket Lake.

That's the core of my question though, why "might as well"? Z490 Dark will most likely be slightly less expensive and is available now. What would be the value added of Z590 Dark for Comet Lake?

I’m in this boat too but a far a feeling it won’t be cost effective meaning paying 20% or more for 5% performance. I’m hoping that’s not the case but if it is I’ll just be buying a rebate z490 board and 10900k on rebate too.

Keep in mind a Z590 board with Rocket lake will have a dedicated 4x PCIe lane for the SSD, Comet Lake and Z490 boards won't have that. But if you're buying Comet Lake anyway then you might as well save money on Z490. Just be sure you're actually saving money, I don't think even Z490 board prices will drop by much for awhile.

Bottom line, Z590 will give no benefit over Z490 for 10th gen CPU.
If you can get a Z590 that you want at the same price point as Z490, go for it.
If not, save a couple of bucks and get a Z490 board.

When they had sales on 10900k processors I couldn't find a Z490 Dark board for less then $500... do you guys know another spot?

RBAR support might be slightly better on Z590 though, most of the Z590 full features are available just paired with a Rocket Lake

11900K won't be day & night in games over 10900K, as a matter of fact, right now it's just below... :))
the new microcode will bump 11900K to 5.1GHz to be more or less on the same level as the 10900K, but the heat cost would require a beefy cooling, expect 1.35V to be a "good" voltage from now on, so 1.4+V will be something common I think

on the other hand, I experienced during time that initial batches are a bit worse in the first months, stuff bought after 4-5 months needed at least 0.05V less for the same frequency, so I'm not rushing anymore this time acquiring a new processor
for instance I bought last August a 10900K which barely did 5.0GHz on 1.35V, hot as frak, in October a bought another one which easily passes prime95 and so on just 1.25V

I'll probably switch my Z490 over Z590 (as mobos like Apex are not to be found after some time everywhere) and then wait for a while if 11900K will worth the swap as well

Interesting point about new chips I didn’t really think of. I mean the 10900k is still great regardless of how the 11900k actually ends up being.

I have to admit, the Z590 Dark is a dangerously sexy board.

If I'm not mistaken, one of the big upgrades is PCIe 4.0 support in the z590.

Yes, but not on 10th gen. You need an upcoming Rocket Lake processor.

I paid $605 (no tax) for a 9900K and a decent MSI Z390 MB almost exactly 2 years ago.

Main reason I'd buy Z590 is for the PCIe bandwidth, you can run a high end GPU off 4.0 8x no sweat which leaves tons of PCIe lanes open.  Plus the M.2 specific CPU lanes.

Dude what are you talking about. Its not "worse" than a 10900K SMH. Maybe chill out with the unsubstantiated rhetoric tho? Get one yourself and bench it, play in games with it, do some daily driving with it, and then if you still want to you can come on here and start saying stuff like this if. Then, we can use stats and specifics and science instead of just fake news. I know for a fact that for the vast majority of users out there the 11900K will be "better" than a 10900K.

odd you tell me to chill on the rhetoric then say that you “know for a fact” it will be better. I‘m basing my comments on posted comparisons and tech industry opinions. Which I’ll reiterate I can’t understand how it wouldn’t be better, which is why I have one tentatively preordered. What articles have you seen it performing better? I understand the IPC uplift argument but I’ve only seen things like Adobe caring. I personally care about gaming performance.

I just tested (benchmarked with Time Spy) a Z490 board (not EVGA) with the 11th Gen processor and the RTX 3090.  I expected a performance boost from the PCIe 4, which was showing in the Nvidia panel, but it actually decreased.

I currently have a thread in the Graphics section to see if anyone knows why.   Is there actually some physical or electrical difference in the PCIe configuration between the Z490  and Z 590 boards that would make some difference?

Beyond that, I am still wondering why there are no Z590 boards for sale.

I am running an 11700K on my Gigabyte Z490 and my PCIe bandwidth increased almost exactly by double confirming I am now running at PCIe 4.0 speeds. Are you using 3Dmark's PCIe bandwidth test or another test?
