Our friends at Audio Note did some extensive listening testing with the NU Audio Pro before launch and compiled a list of Op-amps they tested.  Each of the op-amps listed below are certified to work on the NU Audio Pro cards.  Please note that the op-amp sockets on the daughterboard card (NU Audio Pro Surround) have the same characteristics as the Line-Out op-amp socket.

NU Audio owners can also use this list for Op-amps that will work when properly installed.  Op-amps will be listed according to compatibility for Line-Out, and Line-Out + Headphone.

Much like our motherboard/CPU memory support lists, just because an op-amp is not listed on this guide doesn't mean that the op-amp is not compatible with the NU Audio Pro or NU Audio cards.  Similarly, feel free to experiment on your own.  There are a handful of op-amps that our friends at Audio Note omitted due to a poor audio outcome, but the rest will ultimately be up to you to test on your own to determine if you like the overall audio signature.

First, some notes about op-amp rolling:
  • Op-amp rolling is covered under EVGA's Warranty.  Please remember, however, to reinstall the original op-amps to your EVGA NU Audio Pro/NU Audio card(s) prior to sending them in for warranty service.  The card must be in original factory condition to be accepted for RMA.
  • Make sure to get a good tool to remove op-amps.  The wrong tool can cosmetically scratch the op-amp and/or cause you to bend the pins when removing it.
    • Any IC extractor tool should be fine, although you might need to carefully nudge a capacitor or two out of the way.  Here's one I used: Link
  • The Headphone signal path is downstream of the Line Out path for both the NU Audio Pro and NU Audio cards.  Changing the Line Out op-amp will alter the Headphone audio signature, but changing the Headphone op-amp will not alter the Line Out audio signal.  For headphone users, it's recommended to change both the Line Out and Headphone op-amps for the greatest effect, but there's nothing wrong with trying one at a time.
  • Compatibility for the op-amp sockets is determined by the type and maximum operating voltage of the socket and op-amp.  Since the NU Audio Pro and NU Audio cards use a standard 8pin dual op-amp layout, the sockets are spec'd to a ± symmetrical voltage.  As a general rule, if the op-amp has a minimum operational voltage range within the parameters of the socket and its maximum operational voltage is higher than the parameters of the socket, it can be used.
    • For example, the U564 Headphone Out socket on the NU Audio Pro has a voltage spec of ±14.5V.  This socket will be compatible with dual op-amps that have a minimum operational voltage equal to or less than ±14.5V and a maximum operational voltage equal to or higher than ±14.5V.
    • If the op-amp has a minimum operational voltage higher than ±14.5V or a maximum operational voltage range of less than ±14.5V, then you will likely damage the op-amp.
    • This is why some op-amps that are compatible with the Line Out socket (which has a voltage spec of ±5V) may not be compatible with the Headphone Out socket.
      • e.g. the AD8056 supports a min of ±4V and max of ±6V.  This op-amp is compatible with the Line-out op-amp socket, but would be damaged by the Headphone out op-amp socket.
The socket specs and default op-amp specs on the NU Audio Pro/NU Audio Cards are:

NU Audio Pro:
Spoiler

  • Line Out (U613): ±5V
  • Default op-amp - AD8056
    • (Min= ±4V, Max= ±6V
  • Headphone Out (U564): +/- 14.5V
  • Default op-amp - LT1469
    • (Min= ±4.5V, Max= ±18)
close
NU Audio Pro Surround:
Spoiler

  • Line Out (U633, U632, U636): ±5V
  • Default op-amp - OP275
    • (Min= ±4.5V, Max= ±22V)
close
NU Audio:
Spoiler

  • Line Out (U613): ±5V
  • Default op-amp - AD8056
    • (Min= ±4V, Max= ±6V)
  • Headphone Out (U564): ±14.5V
  • Default op-amp - OP275
    • (Min= ±4.5V, Max= ±22V)
close

List of Op-amps (If SOIC only, I’ve tried to mark this next to the model. Please double-check for yourself before purchasing. You will also need an adapter to go from SOIC to DIP, and the ability/tools to solder):

According to the sample, I have to conclude that one of the non-approved IC line outputs is LT1469. I ask because the one at the moment works perfectly in place of the AD8056 and in my hearing it outperforms it.

I'm working from a rough list, so it's possible that I missed one or two.  The LT1469 is compatible with both op-amp socket on either the NU Audio or the NU Audio Pro, so there shouldn't be an electrical issue.

Lol, welcome to the wonderful and horrible world of audio.  Much like selecting headphones or speakers, you probably just need to sample a few and see which one appeals to your ears more.  A number of members have posted throughout the forums with their recommendations, but those recommendations are certainly dependent on their tastes in audio signature.  That can be a starting point for you, but make sure to give them a little time to burn in for a bit before you draw your conclusions.

I'd recommend avoiding the SOIC choices for now, since you'll need an adapter and a bit of soldering to use them.

I can ask our friends at Audio Note to see if they still have the op-amp and time to test.

    Hey EVGATech_LeeM,

is the NE5532 really "electrical" pin-compatible to the Line-Out of the NU Audio?

    Best regards

As long as you get the standard P-DIP version, I don't see why not.  This chip was tested in the Line-Out op-amp on a NU Audio or NU Audio Pro card, so I wouldn't worry about it.

Hey. Why is there  headphone list  no OPA1612? Is it not compatible?   Will the tests op-amp in the headphone output?

I'm sure it's compatible.  From a technical standpoint, it falls within the voltage range for both op-amp sockets.  Remember, this list is from our friends at Audio Note, who tested with a bunch of op-amps on hand and listened to the audio performance.  This is by no means a fully conclusive list of op-amps that are compatible with the NU Audio cards, much like our compatibility for memory DIMMs on our motherboards.

Hi sorry if i sound like a repeat over and over. I love your evga nu sound card, prop to the company thing is freaking awesome. Most of my life being a gamer power always been a problem, i love it, but what is the best Op-amp rolling for the evga nu sound card, like lots of people high bass, but really clear sound, would love to top it off. If you could give me a link on where i can buy it at that be great ty for your time.

To look into the Burson Audio - V6 Classic or V6  Vivid. I put V6 Classic dual on my sound card.

Muses02  Does anybody have this installed in the headphone or line out ? curious on what it exactly does the sound, warm ? more detail etc ?  I want to change out my op amps, but there are so many where to start.  I like a slight warm sound, just a little, good detail, defined bass and smooth mid range.  Any ideas where to start, cause im running the nu sound into my intergrated amp and it sounds good, but want to improve it.  Thanks for any heads up.

I've had the muses 02 in the line out for a while. Mid's seem to be duller and less detailed. Went to the OP 2134, mid's were a bit better and highs more clearer but the bass seem to be muddled. Ended up going back to the AD 8056. I think the card is just tuned more to this op amp as its the original that it was built around.

I am using NJR MUSES3 for HEADPHONE
and Sparkoslabs Dual Discrete Op Amp SS3602 for Speakers ( WARNING : DON'T CONNECT THIS OP-AMP TO HEADPHONE! )

Sparkos fits perfectly inside the case, No cutting needed however it requires a bit higher voltage to operate but still works great with NU Audio

I believe this is the best setup!

as you know every Op Amp has the characteristics of its own and also it depends on your speaker setup, replacing op amps is a pointless idea in my opinion if someone plans to use the regular speaker/headphone

these two that I mentioned make the sound more harmonic, MUSES has slight difference but Sparkos changes are highly noticeable!

also be careful about NJR MUSES, there are many replica / knock off ones out that may damage your board

What do you feel the improvements are to this setup over the stock op-amps?

as you know every Op Amp has the characteristics of its own and also it depends on your speaker setup, replacing op amps is a pointless idea in my opinion if someone plans to use the regular speaker/headphone

these two that I mentioned make the sound more harmonic, MUSES has slight difference but Sparkos changes are highly noticeable!

also be careful about NJR MUSES, there are many replica / knock off ones out that may damage your board

How much did it cost you to do all this with the op amps ?

I have replaced them about a year ago .. I believe both together costed me about $50

Your using the 3602 for the line out ? Andrew at sparkos told me to use the 3602 for the headphone, he said the voltage on the line out is wrong for the 3602, why are you saying dont use the 3602 for headphone ?

Which OP-Amp is better put in the Line-Out? is it the burson v5i or muses02? im debating on the two op-amps since I've read both are really good OP-AMPS.

i have both the burson v5i D and the muses 02...tried in the card and used on a Denon amp with Wharfedale 12.1 speakers.....i didnt notice any improvement in sound with either.....but everyone is different in what they hear.

I have changed a few op amps around and noticed a little difference, but im finding its not worth the price of the op amps themselfs.  The v6 burson did give me some changes in a positive way.  Starting to think the stock op amps are the way to go and save your money from chasing op amps for minute sound changes.  Im also finding this card doesnt drive 300 ohm cans all that well which leaves me with a just a dac.
