For those that have changed out the thermal pads, are you still seeing improvements? Are you happy with what you did and are they anything that you'd do differently?
Did you find the 3mm pad from Optimus worth it in the end, or would you go a different route?

@Jsunn Check out my post where I did a near full coverage thermal pad and the improvements were great. My PC has been running constantly since I modified it and temps are still rock solid and same as day 1

have you had any issues running the HC block and the mp5works block in parallel?
 
I was actually just looking at the MP5works serial block yesterday but I paused because I wasn't quite sure how I would integrate it with different tubing sizes at different places in the loop.  it seems like the the 4mm tubing for the mp5works block would create a backflow problem if it was done in serial with 10/16 tubing everywhere else.
 
also, did you use the 3mm clips or the 6mm clips?  just asking to avoid buying replacement clips and having to ship them across the pond.

Thank you! I went with the parallel version due to the clean setup and low profile. My card is vertical and there isn't much space in the rear. Parallel appears to be working and keeps the VRAM super cool. I went with the 6mm clips but had to modify the backplate to make sure they bite. They even offer 8mm clips now. I would order the two sizes since they are so cheap.

I have one of the mp works parallel back plate coolers on a stock hydrocopper seems to work pretty good for not doing any thing to the card at all. Im still trying to get my buddy to cut 2 solid copper back plates for me on the cnc...then i will add a big thermal pad. The hydro copper is the lower of 2 cards i have in this computer with a 3 space pci spacing and there was no way any thing else would fit in there no fitting i could find would even remotely have enough clearance for the Series cooler with the bigger lines! I tried every thing i could think of. I do have a series back plate cooler for the top car though i don't see there being much of a temp difference. Will definitely give a update if i ever get the copper back plates and finish this on-going...never ending build.

I love! The copper super clean! If i ever do a liquid rig again its going to have the external rad for sure! Only seen 1 that blew even yours away but it was crazy even the frame was made out of copper tubing and was part of the cooling system! Still super awsome build!

I am excited, I just got my mp5works block.
 
Going to install this weekend I hope!  Its has a really nice feeling of heft to it and it has a preinstalled thermal pad.  Looks likeit will be very straight forward.

I couldn't help myself, I installed it tonight.  Very promising results.  Not as good as an active backplate from optimus no doubt but I'll post the 20x PR comparison before and after.

PR 20x run, before (left) and after (right).  Ambient was probably about 1C cooler last night during the before run.
 
GPU temp change is pretty nominal, HC block does a good job with that.  There are broad favorable changes to the temps.  GPU hotspot has always been my challenge.  The decrease isnt a ton but the stability is vastly improved.  Hotspot sits around 68-70 whether +mem is +0 or +mem is +1000, which is impressive.
 
The rest of the backside temps speak for themselves, especially PWR5.  I had some trouble with the clips like others have said.. so I kind of rigged it to the backplate with some velcro straps.. lol.  
 
I haven't had a chance to test the waters with +core yet.

Nice work documenting the difference.  Looks like you have the solution you have been looking for in reducing the VRM temps and that powerstage 5 temp too.  Just to make sure those temps are in celcius right?  If so, the drops in temperature are pretty good.  You should feel good about the impact the changes made.  May not win any appearance awards with the velcro straps, but the performance looks very solid.  To me, I would also prefer the results you are getting rather than the appearance of a couple of velcro straps you might be hard pressed to see once your case is closed up and side glass in.  
 
The choice for you to add the MP5 backplate looks like the right decision.  Well worth the cost and time to add it to your loop from these early results.  
 
Now enjoy your pc and make some runs on it to see how much your scores will improve with the reduced temperatures.

Gotspeed, thanks for the feedback.  That is correct!  Temps are in Celsius.
 
But yeah lol those straps aren't pretty but they get the job done.  The block sits pretty tight to the backplate with very little play.  Unfortunately, the 6mm clips were too small.  I should have just bought them all.  I didn't want to clamp the cooler to the GPU either as the MP5works block has some curve to it and its only plastic... so I went with the straps.  They are easy to adjust and its just temporary .  I have some bigger clips coming so that should improve the appearance once in place.
 
The thing that really surprised me is that the GPU hotspot just kind of sits around 68-70C under 100% load without any overclock.  But then if I pop on a +100core/+1000mem, its still 70-72.  So that GPU Hotspot temperature vs GPU Temperature delta is really a headscratcher for me.  I have remounted the block 7 times at this point, have a full coverage backplate thermal pad and tried every kind of name brand thermal pad for the front (Gelid ultimate, gelid extreme, Thermalright, EVGA, optimus (fujiopoly), and I really just haven't gotten there.  So in that respect, I'm kind of at a loss.. but like you said it might just be a silicon lottery thing.  End of day, the card is still a rockstar so I can't complain too much

Just got my Kingpin a few weeks ago and after I broke her in, the card has been performing great. It's amazing the mods the people in this forum have done and has me reading through all the 44 pages. My kingpin from the second I turned it on started making this fridge like noise, after a few days the noise has disappeared and I'm guessing the air bubbles have subsided from the AIO. I'm incredibly interested in some of the mods I've seen in this topic so far or even repad work to get my temps down.

The 9th and final remount.  I outlined in white where you can see the nubs of the mp5works clips once the card is mounted back into the system.  I did end up removing the NVlink cap to get the top PCI backplate block clip a bit easier to get in place.  I might notch the NVlink cap at some point but right now, i'm indifferent.  I'm tapping out now, I'm satisfied and this probably isn't going to get much better than it is. 
 
If I were starting from scratch here is what I'd get:
 
* 2mm Thermalright odyssey pads for hydrocopper front
* 3mm Optimus full coverage pad for back
* 3mm Thermalright odyssey for inside of VRM area
* KPX thermal paste
* mp5works parallel block with 4 x 8mm clips
 
Avoid Gelid pads imo.  They are very hard and do not compress well at all.  Good luck peeps.  Below is where its at with this final remount.

So, with the HC block on are the 8mm Clips catching the PCB? , I know there is no place for clips with the AIO shroud and I was not keen on grinding a spot out for them to fit like the other poster ,  I do have a HC block in my closet,

Yes, the 8mm clips catch the PCB.  no other way to do it AFAIK
 
you can either notch the backplate, loosen the backplate so that the hooks catch, or keep the backplate flush and use the big clips that will hit the PCB

Hello All, 
I want to put new thermal pads on my Kingpin Hybrid 3090. 
Can you please help me with recommended thermal pad thickness for the front and back of the card? 
 
I will be keeping the stock cooler for now, but will eventually move to the Optimus KPE waterblock. 
 
From previous posts This is what I think the answer is:
 
FRONT:
VRAM: 2mm
VRM: 3mm???  
 
BACK:
VRAM: 2mm?
BACLK of GPU: ?
Anything else?

The 3090 Kingpin is pretty old now.. but wanted to update my latest changes.
 
I've replaced the thermal pads for vram and GPU coolers with honeywell phase change material (similar to what is being used in gaming laptops and the new 4090 FE cards).  I am using this in place of thermal paste.  Copper shims are being used instead of pads.  Initially, the temperatures were unimpressive, but now they are great!  It really does take some time for the phase change material to do its thing.
 
VRMs now are using Arctic TP-3 pads.  Much cheaper than Gelid and seem like they perform quite well.
 
Rear got the same treatment with Arctic TP3 pads and Honeywell phase change material + copper shims.  Added bonus: Heatpipe based heatsink instead of having a ton of fans and tiny heatsinks on the back of the card, I now have a 90 degree bend that removes heat from the back of the card with a large thermal pad via heat pipes, to an external heatsink that my case fan blows onto.

Overall, I'm happy with the temperatures.  Unfortunately, I must have not won the silicon lottery, as I am unable to do any significant overclocking without crashing/issues.
