Was hoping to get another year out of my 1070 before upgrading after prices come back to normal.  Unfortunately it just burned up today, took it apart and along with a few minutes searching online I found out it was the VRM.  A known issue with the 1070 and 1080 boards because of issues with the thermal pads.  Running on my old EVGA 960 again for now, sad this old 960 ended up being more reliable product than my 1070.  Mostly bummed because I cant even find another GPU to replace it without paying some ridiculous scalper prices.

I should have been able to run this card until it was totally obsolete, not loose it to a fire that luckily didn't wipe out my entire PC, what a shame.

Any of you that still have a 1070 or 1080 that has not burned up I suggest taking them apart to replace compound and pads.  Take the junk they used out of there.

Have always been kind of an EVGA fanboy, all I would use.  Perhaps i'll look elsewhere when I do purchase another.

The thermal interface and pads do not stop the VRM from giving out. It was never a temperature dependent issue, it was a bad run of VRM from a different company and EVGA did their best to replace the cards or give folks the chance to upgrade, but unfortunately not everyone could or had the chance to.

I’m sorry you have lost your card.

I'd be interested in the reason why they went with a different component vendor.  Was it availability or to save a few cents?

I don’t think it was a different vendor, I think it was strictly a bad batch of components, which is why some cards had VRM burn out, but most did not. If it had been a heat issue, most of the cards would have experienced the same fate, but it wasn’t heat, because all of the cards at the time had issues with the VRM getting hot.

Well, I emailed a picture and entered the serial number.  As for the whereabouts of the invoice....who knows.  Probably got tossed out long ago.

Oh well if anything maybe the serial number will help track product failures.

You can check the serial number for warranty here

Secondarily, if you bought it from from a well known outlet like Newegg  or Amazon, you can get a copy of the invoice from them.

GPU has been shipped, should be in their possession later today.

Side note, my old 960 has been chugging along nicely while the 1070 is down lol.  I mean not playing any Warzone on it but its been running my monitors and WoW just fine lol.

I hope so, figured they were going to repair/replace since they asked for it back.  Had to pay $25 to ship it to them, hoping I get a get a working card returned to me.

My feelings wouldn't even be hurt if they were out of my make and had to settle for a 1080ti they had laying around

Are you saying you sent it back with an official RMA number?

Replacement 1070 in hand.  Wondering if I should check if it has the upgraded thermal pads, probably does.

Your new card will have them. Again, they have nothing to do with the VRM or other component failures, only temperature. Even if the other component temps are kept in check, they are still susceptible to failure.

Was this card still covered under official warranty? My EVGA 1070 FTW just seemed to have caught fire while idling in Windows, nice black burn mark near the VRMs even. So seems I was even lucky the rest of my pc was not damaged.

The one customer service guy I talked to was not too helpful though, because the official warranty had already expired.

Pretty disappointed to hear that at an earlier time the information of the bad batch of components was not better shared, and so I did not know to insist that the card should be exchanged for a fixed one. Even paid some extra for an EVGA card when I bought it, maybe not the best choice.

When this was initially found years ago, it was covered by YouTube video, press release from media, and lots of information put out on these very forums, and Reddit… so much of Reddit.. That was 5 years ago. 5 years is not a short period of time.

    When did your warranty expire?

    When did your warranty expire?

    Thanks for your response.

At that time I believe the focus was more on that the VRMs might or might not be getting hot, and that it was officially not really an issue anyway, like mentioned in this thread:

After filling in my serial number for the thermal pads on the EVGA site I even get this message: "The EVGA product entered does not have an optional EVGA Thermal Mod Kit installed. Please understand that the Thermal Mod kit is optional and in no way required."

Maybe I'm misunderstanding though, so feel free to correct me :)

The warranty already expired 2 years ago. The video card was not exactly heavily used though and for instance the motherboard/cpu are way older and still functioning fine, so I feel like I could have reasonably expected the video card to last a little longer too than it did maybe, under normal conditions?

Edit, won't let me post the url of above mentioned thread but it's like this: Is-the-EVGA-1070-SC-effected-by-the-VRM-overheating-issue-m2571376

Anyway, my initial comment above was specifically because the original topic starter did not register his product until this year, so I was guessing he didn't get the extended warranty either within the first 90 days after purchase.

So I was curious how the RMA process for him (or others) was started anyway :) Especially with current insanely inflated video card prices, any solution would be much appreciated.

What is the part number for your GPU? The part number should end in -KR or -KB and could help with figuring out if the GPU was manufactured before or after the thermal pads were added.

As for being 2 years out of warranty, that is tough. The OP could have picked their card up close to the end of the lifecycle of the 10 series GPU’s, meaning it was still close to the warranty period, so hopefully they respond to see if there is any information they can provide.

True, was hoping for a little leniency considering the underlying component issue, but maybe it is asking too much. Even a simple refurbished card would be better than nothing since I have nothing to drive my monitors now.

Part number is 08G-P4-6276-KR. It was eligible for receiving thermal pads and I'm pretty sure I even did the recommended BIOS update back then.

Edit: OP mentioned installing thermal pads, so that might suggest his card was a bit older too actually.
