You should be able to just fine. Though it would be a waste to be honest. They will perform nearly identical to each other for games.

^^+1  This guy knows his stuff. It seems like a lot of trouble for minimal return. If you have the 3090 feel lucky, they have been scarce. I have been signed up for step-up to the 3090 FTW Ultra since OCT 20

It's not about the performance it is about the noise level: The XC3 is a jet engine and has to run at 100% fan speed unless you put a custom curve and loose abour 20% of performance after few minutes. I have a Fractal Meshify S2 full of noctua fans and a NZXT x73 and the temp is so toasty that I have to open my side panel.
Right now I have set a PL of 82% and fan curves @ 75% max to offset the temperature and the noise level.

I come from a 2080 S Gaming ultra (3 slots) and my case was SILENT. I hope the 3 slot FTW3 will be more silent.
Also, I paid 1900€ for the XC3 so with a step up to FTW @ 1500€ I get a free upgrade...

What are you considering "toasty" temps? There is no way you are losing 20% performance after 20 mins. If that is the case you either have something very wrong with your card and need to RMA or are just exaggerating (which I'm thinking you are). I got bad news for you though, if you are expecting a silent PC with a triple fan cooled RTX 3090, you are in for a lot of disappointment. The cards draw north of 400w and that takes a lot of cooling capacity and air movement.

It should be possible since last I checked the FTW3 is the step up option for any card below it.

Yeah thanks, I joined the queue.
It could be a defect on my GPU as the GPU die is only at 62°C and the card is thermal throttling. Maybe a bad thermal pad/paste on the power delivery or memory.

The card does not thermal throttle at 62C. I think you are misunderstanding what that means. ALL the cards drop boost bins starting at just 40C load, but that is NOT thermal throttling. That is just how GPU boost 3.0 works. They will still run a turbo clocks (which is anything above their advertised boost clock. In your case 1695Mhz, so if you card is running anything over that it is NOT thermal throttling.

To me, PerfCap reason --> "Thrm" is Thermal Throttle.

No, that is not thermal throttling. All that means is your performance capped by thermals. That just means that to attain the next boost bin (steps of 15Mhz) you need to lower the GPU temp for it to turbo higher. If the card is running beyond 1695Mhz which it looks like it is, the card is NOT thermal throttling. There will always be a perf cap reason be it, vrel, pwr or thermal.
