So as an update here I'll post some finding that are very encouraging from my last experience with an AMD card (5700XT). So far the drivers seem worlds better in regards to general stability and just error free use. The performance in VR is great in virtually (see what I did there?
) every game I've tested on my Rift S. No stutters, no odd behavior. AMD's VR performance has been lacking for years and was so bad that I had to give up on my 5700XT last year and replace it with a RTX 2070 in this rig. It just didn't play well in VR with stutters and jerky rendering making me uneasy when playing. That was disappointing considering the regular performance of the cards in 2D games was very similar with the 5700XT having a little edge. That certainly was not the experience in VR however, the 5700XT lagged behind the RTX 2070 not only in benchmarks but real games like Dirt Rally 2.0 or Stormland. I would have to lower settings in those games in order to have stutter free gameplay. Now I'm not sure if AMD actually "improved" their VR support for this generation or if these cards just brute force their way pass driver optimization issues, but the end result is all games I own and have tried in VR can be cranked to max settings and enjoyed hiccup free.
EDIT:
Ran a couple passes of VRMark on the 6900XT and RTX 3090 systems
6900XT system = 13404
https://www.3dmark.com/vrpor/495821 RTX 3090 system = 15228
https://www.3dmark.com/vrpor/495824 Pretty close, though as to be expected the VR performance is indeed better on the RTX 3090 as Nvidia's driver support for VR is still just plain better. Even though the 6900XT enjoys a rasterized gaming slight advantage in normal 2D games, that quickly vanishes in VR and a comfortable lead to the RTX 3090. Guess this answers my above question in that AMD's driver support hasn't really got any better for VR, it's just the 6900XT's raw performance brute forcing it's way in.
