Hello, I need some help with my Z97 board, I run it with Corsair 16 gig RAM kit which is to 8 gig sticks, and I've had no issues with it with my i7 until now.

When it tries to do the monthly November incremental, and/or does the feature update to 20H2, the update begins and installs and after 30% when the computer restarts, it begins the reboot sequence and then I get a blue screen with a page fault error. It would do the typical two-boot try and then do the automatic repair and uninstall the update and I would be back to my desktop.

The log showed that I put on 10 forums that it was something to do with Intel management engine, but I also uninstalled that and retried, same thing.

At some point I must have uninstalled something and then I couldn't boot to the drive at all, and at that point I decided that I would wipe my boot drive, as a lot of my files are not on it I have two other drives for that.

I wiped and then tried to install 20H2 from USB that was created with the media creation tool.

This installed with no issues, until I got to the desktop, after which in a couple moments, enough time for me to try and open settings, and then it would blue screen with page fault. And then it would not boot up.

I had swapped my ram sticks, I even tried an old set of ram sticks that had never given me any issues before, and I had the same behavior.

On my current RAM meme test 86 ran overnight and no issues, Windows memory diagnostic app ran an extended mode with cache and found no issues. When the system is on the previous version I have no problems whatsoever and I have never had blue screens before now when trying to do this update.

Today I installed the May update, 2004, 20H1, and I had also decided to take the time to switch my BIOS from legacy to UEFI boot, and basically switched my lineup for my boot drive to the newer mode instead of MBR since I was reinstalling the OS, my two other drives are MBR and that is no issue because they're secondary.

The system booted and installed and then I tried the update and I had the same behavior, this time when it rolled back there appeared to be issues left over, such as not being able to open device manager without being giving a message that the administrator was preventing me from opening it, when I'm a local account and the admin, it also was running high disk usage so I decided that that rollback had given me a problem and again I went installed 20 H1, again wiping the partitions of my boot drive and reinstalling, that installation went fine, and I have no issues with the OS at this point, I actually started to replace files back to my desktop and documents etc and started to do some replacements of drivers such as the chipset, my graphic card, you know what I mean.

So my question for EVGA techs, and anyone else who might have one, is what to do now?

Is there something I'm missing that's keeping me from doing this update, or is the update the issue and I need to just block it until something else comes along and end up doing a fresh install from that ISO?

My bios is on version 2.06, and I'm up for any suggestions, I am currently not overclocking my i7 nor am I pushing my RAM, The memory settings are using the XMP1 profile, but I'm basically just running it as is.

Any thoughts anyone, thanks ahead of time.

Marc

I'd suggest you burn https://www.memtest.org/ to a USB drive, boot to it, and let it do a few passes overnight on your system.

Even if you don't overlock, a lot of boards tend to auto-OC stuff regardless, something might not be stable somewhere. I have a kit of DDR3-1600 that has two XMP profiles... it is unstable at the 1.35v profile with my 4790K, but it works fine using the 1.5v profile. My chip was extremely memory finicky in general, it hates running 1:7 memory ratios too.

That being said I have not tried to install 20H2 update myself, didn't see a point so I'm still on 2004.

I have the EVGA X97 Classified and its not a memory issue. Many of the KB updates prior to 20HB also have issues. My primary issue was yours (BSOD with PAGE_FAULT_IN_NONPAGEDAREA), but also after some KB updates "no audio output device detected". None of my audio devices show in the sound control panel and I have no sound.

For the BSOD, disable the Intel Management Engine Interface device in the device manager. That was the cause for me. I'm unable to re-enable it because it BSOD's trying to, but the system runs stable without it.

Another issue I had was Cisco Sophos VPN software was causing updates to not install all the way (they would fail), and I had to uninstall that to get my system to update.

So the remaining issues I have are:

1) No Intel MEI (disabled or it will BSOD), and
2) No audio devices  (they all show in device manager just fine though)

I think this is an Intel chipset driver issue with the latest Windows updates. I have sent an email tonight to EVGA, but I'm very frustrated. This has been happening since an early KB update in September.

Hey thank you I didn't think it was a memory issue either, and it had started the same time yours did so I think we're alike, it actually just be our snow deed on me when I did Intel rapid storage to put in the 9 series hard drive controller for Intel and it's rolling back right now so once I do that I'll go ahead and check it and either end up reinstalling May 20th one and then disabling the device for Intel management and then see what I got, so what you're saying is when you disabled Intel device management engine you got through the page fault and got onto 20H2? cuz I believe I tried that as well I uninstalled it from the control panel and I still had the BSOD This also happens on the 2020-11 monthly update too.

I was able to update with or without MEI - my updates were not finishing because of the Sophos VPN client; but the BSOD was purely being caused by MEI. From what I have read its up to the device manufacturers, in this case EVGA, to customize and release drivers for it because Intel does not release Generic ones for most devices. So I'm guessing something changed in Windows that the last MEI driver from EVGA (back from years ago) is no longer compatible.

If you hit the no audio device issue like I did, here is a workaround.

I emailed EVGA but it might help if you emailed them asking for updated drivers too. Maybe it will push them to get one out

Z97 Classified user here.
Plagued by nothing but issues with latest windows updates ranging from loss of all Audio inputs and outputs, failing updates leading to BSOD's and windows repair, to default admin account being activated, along with simple things like not being able to press any key to login. I have which updates were causing this behavior written down at home. The audio issue has been the worst however and I've had to reset windows twice since early September. I've since disabled automatic updates via registry, and been solid for sometime, however windows is still downloading the updates, thankfully I've been able to avoid actually installing. I submitted the issue with Microshaft, but I figure like always......nothing will come of it. May be End of life for this platform with increasing issues provided by windows update. Sad because this 4790K is still rocking all my games just fine. Glad I'm not the only one experiencing issues on their Z97 platform.

aatxe,

You're the man! I thought I had uninstalled IME and must not have disabled the device still in device manager under system devices, i did another fresh wip this morning to start, disabled that and let it do updates and YES!! It's updated to 20H2 and the 2020-11 monthly. Whew!

I have to say I never did have the audio issues though, all is well on my system now, I just have to reload stuff, most of my data is intact on other drives.

I will say that on one rollback earlier, it borked and did give symptoms like yours, audio, can to open dev manager, but just wiped and fresh installed again.

So now I'm busy reinstalling apps I need.

I'm happy that you guys confirmed my issue, i knew it wasnt a memory thing :)

Win 10 --- has Optional driver updates, --- should have something like -- "if your having any issues after Win 10 update", you can install one of the optional drivers

Will the Nvidia GPU sound driver work for you ?

I have a different brand Z97 .. can't test it right now as the loop is all apart - I sold the 2 EVGA 1080Ti FTW3 GPUs that were in it

Re: Z97 Classified and Win 10 20H2 update 2020/11/16 12:58:22 (permalink)
Some of optional driver updates are not correct for the chipset. One changes the chipset driver from X97 to Xeon in the device manager, and the other seems to have no affect. Nvidia audio drivers also don't work, or any USB audio device. It's confirmed an issue (by users) in Windows and the workaround I provided (by the awesome gent in that thread) seems to be the only viable workaround right now.

There's really two distinct issues and I'm not sure if both are related to Intel MEI, but MEI BSOD on its own is one issue, the audio is a whole other. But consensus from others seems that it is certain older chipsets/baseboards that are affected

Re: Z97 Classified and Win 10 20H2 update 2020/11/18 16:48:47 (permalink)
I'll chime in as another Z97 Classified owner that got bit by this. This board is in my wife's rig, and last weekend she complained that it ran an update and after that she couldn't get logged in. I was getting an error that the user profile service couldn't load the profile. Since this computer is older, and many machines I installed for the past several years I split the install into a C: drive with OS and programs on an SSD, then a standard large hard drive for D: that gets the users folder with all the profiles.  Always worked very well, never gave me any issues with updates even though Microsoft doesn't support it.  But this time, somehow it turned the entire D: drive into read only, and Windows could not see it or any data on it at all.  So I'm thinking crap, bad drive at first.  Booted up a Linux USB, and I saved all the data cause Linux could see it just fine.  Then I figured I'll re-install it.  Put in a new 1TB SSD, this time, no need now for a big data drive, and proceeded to install Windows 10 20H2.  Blue screen after blue screen, and it always seemed to happen as the video driver was being update so that's what I thought at first.  So I did a fresh install, disconnected from the Internet with the latest Nvidia drivers on a USB to install first.  That went fine, then plugged in Ethernet and within 2 minutes, blue screen.  Then I found this thread.  I can confirm that after running another fresh install on 20H2, pulling up device manager, opening up System Devices, then watching for the Intel Management Engine to show up, quickly disabling it prevents the blue screen.  I then updated it and it has the latest November updates and is running fine.

I just wanted to thank the guys that posted this and found the issue.

Hello :)

I encountered the same troubles and found out that everything is fine with BIOS version 1.08 and prior.
I tried to rollback one version at a time from 2.06 but version 2.06, 2.04 and 2.02 have the same effect: systematic "PAGE_FAULT_IN_NONPAGED_AREA" BSOD (even on a clean W10 2004 x64 and W10 20H2 x64 install) where 1.08 runs fine.

Once you get people laughing, they're listening and you can tell them almost anything.

Has anyone tried a fresh install of Windows 20H2.
I'm on X99 and had a ton of issues, file corruption, stuck boot, etc... after update
Finally I just bit the bullet and did a full clean wipe and install of 20H2
No problems since.

Also note I could not find any drivers at Intel's website, it seems they have removed the Chipset driver installs.
I'm using all latest from EVGA site, which are very outdated.

Everything is working fine since.

All those links are correct, however intel has removed all drivers from there.
I guess they want us to let windows handle it now. Only the USB 3.0 driver is all they have for X99

The driver assistant also has nothing.

Seems they removed all drivers for X99 and older, someone has bright ideas at intel.

Another Z97 classified owner here. Can confirm I was experiencing the same issues with recent updates including 20H2 (constant loop of BSOD during update and startup repair removing the update in order to boot). Disabling Intel Management Engine in the Device Manager has allowed me to install the updates and the system has been running without issue since. Will be contacting EVGA to request a fixed driver as recommended above.

Thank you aatxe for the suggestion!

Re: Z97 Classified and Win 10 20H2 update 2020/12/13 08:56:15 (permalink)
Z97 FTW here.

Thanks. Was able to finally pin the inability to update to 20H2 on Intel Management Engine. It took a bit of messing around to disable it and ultimately I uninstalled (not straightforward either, to get it all.) Totally NOT able to re-install EVGA drivers for it -- error message for installer indicated source files not available.

However, Intel ME IS now enabled in Device Manager and "working properly" ... whatever that might mean. Driver is from 2015, Intel 11.0.0.1157.

However, as far as I can tell, no processes associated with Intel ME are running. I really don't know if the damn thing is doing whatever it's supposed to. And I'd like to, of course, but for now I'm updated, anyway.

Jeff

Update: Jan. 2021 -- I had more issues with the next round of Windows updates and had to revert to a pre 20H2 restore point. Then I disabled Intel ME, updated successfully, and left Intel ME disabled, presumably for the rest of the life of the board. Don't know if this is Intel, EVGA or MS problem. Trying not to care.

Re: Z97 Classified and Win 10 20H2 update 2020/12/13 15:05:57 (permalink)
Bigjefffish

I experienced the same issue the Z97 FTW motherboard. As mentioned by others, disabling the Intel Management Engine Interface driver allowed me to install Win10 20H2, however I lost all my sound functionality (all the drivers appeared ok [no errors showing] but computer would produce no sound). I re-installed Win10 2004 so as to get sound back. I tried suggestion from bigjefffish above and that did the trick for me. I rolled back BIOS to older version (1.07 in my case which appears to equate to the 1.08 on the Classified motherboard) and now I can install Win10 20H2 with no issues. I do lose the BIOS update that is supposed to mitigate the Spectre vulnerability (which concerns me), but I can now continue to use my computer as I should be able to. I do hope EVGA puts out a new BIOS or driver update to address this.

Thanks bigjefffish  for the suggestion.

I have the z97 classified.  I had the same issue as everyone here and downgraded to BIOS 1.08.  It solved the issue and I'm running Intel ME 11.7 drivers without issue.

Ran into this same problem 2 weeks ago with two separate Z97 classified boards. After running memtest86, testing with a clean install of Win10 on 4X different hard drives, testing barebones, I am finally at a point where I am installing Windows 8.1 and it is working flawlessly now but I wish I would have consulted with the forums before jumping through so many hoops.

I just want to add to this thread in case someone else is in the same situation as me. I have a similar issue with a z97 stinger wifi motherboard. I too was not able to update to windows 10 2004 or 20h2. To resolve this issue I had to downgrade the BIOS to version 1.05. Doing this avoids the BSOD loop. It's 100% an evga problem to resolve.

Thanks to everyone else in this thread that gave tips.

I am having the same upgrade issue with 20H2 and my Z97 Classified MB.  I want to roll back my BIOS to 1.08, but am unsure if it is as simple as just running the 1.08 "update.bat" tool.  Is this the case, or, do I need to do something else as well.
Thanks in advance for the help.

Running the older version of the .bat worked for me without having to take any other steps.

Has anyone else contacted EVGA about this? I never did even get an acknowledgement of my email. I'm unsure I want to roll back my bios and will if I have to, but I think it would be good for everyone having the issue to contact them and ask them to fix this?

My posting to the EVGA Support Contact Us...
I am trying to install the latest Windows 10 Update (20H2) and the update fails each time. I am running a Z97 Classified motherboard and have tried disconnecting all peripherals in an attempt to allow the update to complete. However that effort did not help.
The EVGA forum for the Z97 MB indicates a problem with the Intel Management firmware causing the update to fail.
Is EVGA willing to update the Z97 IM driver?
Thank you

EVGA's Response
Please note that EVGA does not manufacture or develop the Intel Management Software and if Intel has dropped support for that specific chipset and Windows does not support it for that build of Windows, EVGA does not have any control over this. Have you attempted to do a clean install using the Windows Media Creation Tool?

Regards
EVGA

After getting 20H2 update through, were you able to return to a more current BIOS, or did you have to stay at 1.07/1.08?

Well, here is my experience.  I tried running the update.bat for 1.07 and could not get the BIOS to boot.  I tried every combination of power/reset/red reset button with no success.  Finally I saw the BIOS selector switch on the MB.  It was set at B051.  I tried B052 - no success, and then B053 and I was able to the machine back up and running BIOS 1.02 and Windows 10 with 20H2 installed.  Really not sure how the switch works - I cannot find anything in the documentation regarding it.  If anyone has information on how the switch works I would appreciate some guidance.
thanks, jt
