NVIDIA RTX 3080 Ti, Eventual SUPER Revisions Allegedly Postponed Indefinitely Amidst Supply Woes | TechPowerUp Everyone and their mother expected NVIDIA to announce - if not a SUPER refresh to their existing graphics cards with increased memory sizes - at least the RTX 3080 Ti. That card surfaced as a planned NVIDIA counter to AMD's preemptive pricing of $999 on its RX 6900 XT graphics card (which to be fair, is in itself as abundant a card as unicorns this side of the galaxy). GamersNexus reported NVIDIA partners' comments on the indefinite postponement of the RTX 3080 Ti and possible SUPER derivatives of the RTX 30-series lineup. It's being said that NVIDIA decided (smartly, I would say) to ensure consistent supply of their existing lineup to sate demand, instead of dispersing its limited chip production across even more product lines. This would result, I have no doubt, on NVIDIA only having even more SKUs out of stock than they currently do. Considering the market's current state of mind in regards to NVIDIA's lineup, this seems like the most sensible decision possible. TechPowerUp has in the meantime confirmed this information with NVIDIA partners themselves. I had a feeling this would happen because NVIDIA can't manage at this time to have decent supplies of existing SKUs. AMD is in a similar situation.

Again,.. and realize I'm not arguing with you RJ, ... I'm just saying the constant PR flip-flop is amazing. I'm upset with NVidia . Now the news of no Supers or Ti's -- but just days ago they announce another new card 3060 Ti , along with an entire lineup of mobile sku's ( w/ more memory ) in the 30 xx series lineup ..!?!?!.. It's been 4 months since 'launch' of the 3080 , with hardly any cards in site still... So what is anyone to believe ? I've seen the laptops already showing up ..they've got time to make the improved mobile chips but still not the originals ?.... It's all just so frustrating ...

You would have to be kidding yourself to believe Nvidia isn't holding back GPU wafers that would make a 3080 Ti card. They are just going to wait until some of the heat from low product availability has died down to announce the 3080 Ti.

They wouldn't be holding back anything since like in any other industry the object is to sell inventory and recoup costs and it makes little sense to hold a sellable product in high demand when they can easily cut down what doesn't make it as full 3090 into a 3080 which is what is happening. They will start binning dies into 3 tiers when or if they announce a 3080 Ti/Super or whatever it's going to be called and I'm sure there will be some lead time to accumulate a reasonable inventory before launch but it's not like the are hoarding dies now for a theoretical Ti/Super SKU when they can't even meet demand for the 2 SKUs they already have.

Nvidia is already doing it. Yes it makes since as the profits will be better and Nvidia will have the stock to please people better and not have another PR disaster. I've been in queue for a RTX 3080 XC3 Ultra since September and in queue for Step-Up since September also. EVGA hasn't even been able to fulfill people on the Step-Up list that got on in queue from day one.

That’s exactly why Nvidia isn’t hoarding higher end GPUs now. It doesn’t cost nvidia any more or any less to make a fully functional GA102 or a partially functional GA102. They are all yields of the same die. Nvidia isn’t going to “pass” on a sale now for something with a high margin and higher projected install or sell through base only to defer it to later on something with a lower projected install base like halo products are. If they are hoarding anything now it’s dies that didn’t meet the minimum requirement to be a 3080 for maybe some possible 3070 Ti or stop gap between the 3080 and 3070, they sure as hell aren’t hoarding product that they could easily sell right now as you seem to be thinking.

Is there really even any need to counter a 6900 xt? everything sells out right away, and supply is the only limiting factor, and the bottleneck on sells, and no need to offer anything better if "worse" sells out instantly anyway.

I suspect given the RTX 3060 and RTX 3060 Ti that NVIDIA is more likely to flesh out the lower price points next not many cards are sold at the > $500 segment compared to the $200 segment

Yes they are. It has nothing to do with how much it cost to make the wafers, it's what they can sell the chips for. Trust me, before my queue comes up on the RTX 3080's I have been in since September, Nvidia will announce the 3080 Ti.

From the sounds of the articles I've read on this stuff, the Super or Ti variants were going to be produced by TSMC but they decided to go all in with Samsung instead... so it would make sense to me that we won't see another high-end card from NVIDIA until the next generation.

I was quite surprised they didn't announce some sort of to or super variant of the 3080. But I agree that perhaps it was a logistical choice due to supply being limited and trying to control how many products they are out of at a time 😂😂😂

I think it’s mostly related to the 6900XT by AMD not having good ray tracing. That really hurts the thought of paying $999 for a graphics card when you play Ray traced games worse then a $699 card. That performance in non ray traced games is pretty much the same in most games. Of course in benchmarks you would clearly notice the improvement in frames but when you are playing a game it’s not really as noticeable as both are going to have very smooth gameplay and DLSS can push the 3800 over the 6900XT. It’s RTX that really punishes the cards now.
All this said it really depends on what AMD does in the future. Until the next generation the Ti or the Super is the response NVIDIA has AMD product launches until the 4X00 series eventually comes out in a couple years. I kind of expect that this fall we will see a Super or Ti unless NVIDIA sees a threat.

Full GA102 dies don't grow on trees. If Nvidia was able to supply them in quantity they would be flooding the market with a 3080 Ti with a full GA102 and 12GB at an attractive price point. Glad I lucked out with an early que signup and was able to buy a 3080 FTW3 Hybrid in December. Pretty good card so far. Seriously thought about waiting for the Ti.

There is a gaping chasm in the product stack between the 3080 and 3090, that I'm sure Nvidia would love to fill, but can't, regardless of what AMD is selling. The could up sell a good number of people from the 3080 without cannibalizing 3090 sales. IMHO there was never going to be a 20GB full GA102 for $999, doesn't make any sense and too close to 3090. Maybe a card with 11GB and 11/12th chip or 12GB with full chip or straight 3080 with 20GB. Then there is the missing SLI.

Funny, I got a email notification from EVGA to buy a RTX 3090 which I got into queue on long after the RTX 3080, but I decided not buy it. The value just isn't there on that card for me.

That's been my thinking as well. Samsung 8nm's density is nothing compared to 5nm TSMC, even 7nm TSMC might as well be a node shrink by comparison.

samsung 8nm is 10nm ++ so yeah 7nm tsmc would be a 1/2 node shrink nvidia is not even using samsung 7nm because that is booked and is more expensive samsung gave them a deal using the 10nm++ node ...ie 8nm because they have free space on the old node sort of how Intel makes silicon on 14nm+++++ refinements give similar performance boosts as a shrink (but there is a limit to the node)

The GA102-250 GPU has also changed since the last time we saw them and is now exactly the same as the GeForce RTX 3090 at 10496 FP32 CUDA cores. The GPU will also feature the same 112/328 ROP & TMUs count as the RTX 3090. The clock speeds are set at 1395 MHz base and 1695 MHz boost. As for memory, the card will feature 20 GB of GDDR6X memory. Unlike the 19.5 Gbps speeds of the RTX 3090, the GeForce RTX 3080 Ti is said to retain the same memory speeds as the RTX 3080 at 19 Gbps. Since we are getting a 20 GB bus interface, NVIDIA will be using a 320-bit bus interface which equals a total bandwidth of 760 GB/s. TGP for the card is set to be the same as the RTX 3080 at 320 Watts. That's definitely needed to feed the extra cores so NVIDIA might have to optimize the clocks a bit here. https://wccftech.com/nvid...tions-benchmarks-leak/

Nvidia should do 12GB of memory with a 384bit bus. Would cost Nvidia less and give us better performance.
