Imho the best current sleeper deal is the 2TB Mushkin Enhanced Pilot M.2 NVMe that is regularly under $200, might go lower.  Similar to the EX950 and original 8200 Pro.

Nice catch. I've read these ssds are not much different, as in you can save a ton of cash and wait 4 seconds longer compared to a premium ssd - and they're all by default a huge upgrade from the old hdds, so...

I got the sabrent rocket 4 plus 4 tb for a recent build.  It's nice not having to constantly uninstall and swap around games, my old drive was too cramped.

NVME drives are great for space saving and how clean they are (no sata cables).  You wont see a performance bump with an NVME over a regular Sata 3 SSD though.  Sure if you benchmarking software you will get way higher bandwidth, but real world use like loading games or turning your PC on, there is no performance difference.

You'll never be disappointed with a samsung evo.

Honestly though any ssd will be a huge difference to an hdd. Dont worry too much

NVMe SSDs will bring a difference once Microsoft finally releases Direct Storage. Hopefully, we'll finally see games without loading screens!

The problem is that most game engines are built with HDDs in mind, even PC titles.

For the Samsung 980 Pro and similar ones, remember to always check if the SSD is PCIe 3.0 or 4.0! If it's 4.0 but your motherboard only supports up to 3.0 it's going to be completely useless.

OP, glad you found something you liked..  I can't imagine going back to a non-ssd at this point, would be like torture.

I've been using Samsung drives for a while now (940 pro, 950 pro, 860 evo).  The 970 evo is a good choice now.  It's a great combination of price/perf/reliability.

Same here maxnight.  I've had almost every Samsung SSD, but I've been buying more of the Crucial MX500s lately just because they have been so cheap and the performance is good enough.

If money is no object, the Samsung 980 Pro is what I'd buy. That said, I have used Crucial MX300s and MX500s with a lot of success (they're more equivalent to a Samsung Evo). I think I'll buy a Sabrent Rocket 4 Plus when I rebuild though. Seems really competitive with Samsung, and at a slightly better price.

unless we have that new tech for transfering data from SSD directly to GPU, don't even bother with fast nvme ssds. just buy whatever sata ssd you can find for a good price. you won't notice a difference

Just get whichever you can afford. Most nvme drives are fine speed wise unless you copy large files all day lone.

Tom's Hardware has good coverage of SSD

reading today about MB's with many M.2 slots
"Due to the limited PCIe lanes on processors, not every M.2 port communicates directly with the chip."
----
I just want to put some Samsung SSD's in my WD NAS box :-)
One would think SMART data was a standard between different disk types

---
One day we will find that person who thought putting the M.2 slot under the GPU cards was a good idea :-)

if u've been using hdd all these yrs, once u start with ssd, u will never go back

if you can afford it, go for NVMD m.2 drives, they will surprise u

nowadays, i don't think alot of people use hdd for loading games anymore
