My EVGA GTX 1080 FTW has started to not work.

The VGA error led on the motherboard will stay lit for much longer than it used to, like about 5-10 seconds, then the led turns off and it boots into Windows. At the login screen or in Windows, after about 2 minutes, the screen will become full of scattered, jagged lines and then go blank. See attached photo.

I've tested it on 2 different computers, with same results.

Anyone else have this problem? Maybe it's overheating? I unplugged the computer overnight and it still happened.

If you're having the same indications on two different computers then the GPU is faulty. What is the GPU temperature?

The gpu won't work long enough for me to get into Task Mgr to see the gpu temp. I don't see how to check the temp in the BIOS.

    Here's some other info:
    1. The 2 gpu fans spin at first but then shut off after 10-15 seconds.
    2. I can stay in the BIOS for as long as I want... the gpu never crashes.
    3. Right now, I'm using Windows Safe Mode with Networking and the gpu works fine.
      1. (In Safe Mode, Task Mgr doesn't show the GPU option under the Performance tab so I can't see the temp.)

Okay... In safe mode the base Windows WDM driver is used so you're not using 3D acceleration (Nvidia driver) on the desktop. This is why you can get to the desktop.  As I indicated earlier, if you have the same issue on two different systems the fault lies with the GPU. Without knowing temps, it's hard to say whether disassembly and replacing the TIM and thermal pads would make any difference. If the GPU is still under warranty, I would submit an RMA.

Def submit an RMA if it's under warranty. If not that sucks. Hopefully you can find a 2070 or something on the cheap.

I had an issue with my first 1080 ftw. It somehow got fried one day and it was the only thing that did. It wouldn't turn on and would smoke if I plugged into the regular hdmi output on the pc instead of the gpus.

If I disassemble it, is there something I should be looking for that would indicate a bad gpu? Like a blown resistor or something?

Unfortunately, I got it as a gift in 2018, with no receipt, so I doubt EVGA will make good on their warranty. But, I did submit a ticket anyway. Fingers crossed.

It doesn't matter as long as the serial numbers are intact and you meet the other typical RMA requirements. The only difference would be the warranty date will start from when the product was shipped from EVGA not when it was purchased. You can check the GPU warranty based on ship date here: https://www.evga.com/warranty/check.asp

It says I have 157 days left on the warranty. Well, I'm shocked!

Nice! I'd def just RMA it. Hopefully it doesn't stay gone for very long. Or they say 'well darn, we don't have the stuff to replace this. Better just give him a new card.'

That would be sweet! "We don't have another 1080 FTW, so how about this RTX 3090 we have lying around here... "

That would almost make the year 2020 worth it!

What they try to do is equivalent performance.  They still have a lot of the Turing series they can use for RMA's for years yet. The main thing is you can get your GPU replaced.

Yeah, all I really want is the same gpu that works! A GTX 1080 FTW is still a great gpu for a couple more years.

At first, I thought the gpu was out of warranty, so I did unscrew the gpu plates to see if there was any visible signs of defects or burned chips, but I saw nothing. I ripped the little 'evga' sticker on one of the screws to open it.

Luckily, now that I know it's within the warranty period, the Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act protects me. Hopefully, EVGA won't try and say I voided the warranty.

You're fine. That is NOT, a warranty sticker. It's a tamper sticker just so that EVGA knows the card has been taken apart in some way and to look closer. As long as there's no physical damage you caused, your warranty is good.

    I LOVE EVGA!!

After getting the RMA, I shipped the broken card back and the new one just arrived! No hassle, no fuss!

I will DEFINITELY be an EVGA customer for life!

PS: I received the exact same gpu model: GTX 1080 FTW 8GB ACX 3.0.
