Other than selling them, are there any cool projects that can be done with an old graphics card?

Hopefully, I'll soon be able to upgrade from my 980 (04G-P4-2983-KR) to a 3080. I was thinking of maybe doing an HTPC build with the 980.

I also remember reading an article where someone used an old graphics card to handle physx exclusively. It actually resulted in worse performance :P But I think stuff like that is really interesting.

I do a lot of hand me downs.  My prior gaming rig, has a 970 and pushes the Rift CV1.  My grand kids come over and enjoy playing the virtual roller coaster and such.

Once I get my new G2 and 3080, I'll push my 1080SC and Rift S over to the hand me down rig.  Then I'll need to figure out what to do with the CV1 and 970 GPU....

Gigabyte Z390 Aorus Ultra, i7-9700k (4.9ghz all cores), NH-D15 cooler, 64 GB CL-14 3200mhz RAM, RTX 3090FE, Soundblaster Z, Yamaha 5.1 A/V Receiver, 2x 512GB Samsung NVMe, 1x 1TB Samsung NVMe, 1x 2TB Samsung SSD, Win 10 Pro, TM Warthog, Virpil WarBRD, MFG Crosswinds, 43" Samsung 4K TV, 21.5 Acer VT touchscreen, TrackIR, JetSeat KW-908, Reverb G2, Wheel Stand Pro Super Warthog, Phanteks Enthoo Pro Full Tower Case, EVGA 850 P2 PSU, PointCTRL, Buttkicker 2

Like javelina1, I pass my rigs or cards down to my kids. I used to add my old cards to my FAH folding farm.

I would keep an old card around to troubleshoot if my video card dies. Once it happened to me and I had to borrow a video card from a friend to swap in and verify that was the problem before ordering a new card. Would have saved me a week if I had a spare.

I run them in as high of SLI as possible, lol. 2020/10/21 22:34:52 (permalink)
I run them in SLI and see if it crashes the system or if it will even post. You should try it if you have more than one.

I used to be very generous with all of my extra/old tech, until the day I actually needed like four VGA to DVI adapters (go figure). So now, I usually keep all of my old components and turn them into little servers for various tasks - you never know when you're going to need to use another computer to debug driver level code.

It's always good to keep your spare card just in case your main one dies.
    Nowadays hardware is very fragile.
I know from value source that those never series of Nvidia cards are much less failure-free than old series of cards (not sure about series 3000 yet though).

I have an old 7950GX2 that is currently a shelf display, but I want to mount it in a shadow box and make it wall art.

Retired my last card to a living room home theater media streaming pc. Much faster than a amazon fire stick and more versatile paired with VLC player and watching travel and wedding videos

I've been having the thought of learning to overclock. As it's my only GPU I'm hoping I can buy or win one of these new ones to learn to overclock. It's pretty cool, like tuning an engine.

I don't have a lot of old cards... the one I'm still using most of you guys probably already replaced in the 4th generation. So if I ever get a new one, I'll just keep the old one in case the new one breaks. I wouldn't really get any money for it anyway.
